Scene 1
The story-teller: Once upon a time there was a boy whose name was Jack. Jack lived with his mother. They were very poor, and the old woman made her living by knitting. But Jack was so lazy that he did nothing. So people called him Lazy Jack. (Колись давним-давно жив хлопчик, якого звали Джек. Джек жив зі своєю мамою. Вони були дуже бідні і тому стара жінка заробляла на життя в’язанням. Але Джек був дуже лінивий і нічого не робив. Тому люди прозвали його Лінивий Джек)
Mother: I’m so tired. I can’t work all day and half the night. Jack! Why don’t you go to work and help me? You do nothing but lie in the sun in summer and sit by the fire in winter.(я так втомилась. Я не можу працювати цілими днями та ще й ночами. Джек! Чому ж ти не допомагаєш мені? Ти не робиш нічого окрім як грієшся на сонці влітку і сидиш біля вогнища взимку)
(Jack is silent)
Mother: (angrily) If you don't begin to work for your porridge, I will turn you out of the house. ( якщо ти не почнеш заробляти собі на їжу, я вижену тебе з дому)
Jack (stands)
Jack: Don't worry, Mum. I'll hire for a day to a farmer. I'll make a lot of money. (Не хвилюйтесь, мамо. Я наймусь до фермера. Я зароблю багато грошей)
The story-teller: On Tuesday, Jack went out and hired himself for a day to the farmer. (у вівторок, Джек найнявся на цілий день до фермера)
Farmer: Hello Jack! Do you want to work? (Привіт Джек! Ти хочеш працювати?)
Jack: Yeah, with great pleasure! (Так! З величезним задоволенням)
Farmer: your work was not so good but still…Here is a penny. (ти працював не дуже добре, але все ж таки ось тобі пенні)
Jack: Thank you. (Дякую)
The story-teller: But when he was coming home in the evening, he lost the penny. (Але поки він йшов додому, то загубив пенні)
Mother: Well, Jack, did you get any work? (Джек, чи ти отримав якусь роботу?)
Jack: Yes, I did. And the farmer gave me a penny. (Так, і фермер дав мені пенні)
Mother (in surprise): Oh! Well, where is your penny? (І де ж твоє пенні?)
Jack: I’ve lost it. (Я загубив його)
Mother: You are stupid boy, you should have put it in your pocket. (Ти нетямущий хлопець, ти повинен був покласти його в кишеню)
Jack: I’ll do so another time. (Так і зроблю наступного разу)
The story-teller: On Wednesday Lazy Jack went out again and worked for a cowman, who gave him a jar of milk for his day’s work. Jack took the jar of milk and put it into the large pocket of his jacket. But the milk was all split long before he got home. (У середу лінивий Джек знову пішов працювати до пастуха, який дав йому за роботу глечик молока. Джек взяв глечик з молоком і поклав його у велику кишеню свого жакету. Але все молоко розлилося, поки він дійшов додому)
Mother: What did you get for your work today, Jack? (Що ти отримав за свою роботу сьогодні, Джек?)
Jack: The cowman gave me a jar of milk. (Пастух дав мені глечик молока)
Mother: And where is the milk? (І де ж молоко?)
Jack: Don’t be angry, Mother, I put the jar into the large pocket of my jacket and the milk was all split.(Не злись мамо, я поклав глечик з молоком у велику кишеню свого жакету і молоко розлилось)
Mother: Oh! Why didn’t you carry the jar very carefully in you hands? You silly boy! (Ой! Чому ж ти не ніс глечик дуже обережно у своїх руках?Ти не розумний хлопець!)
Jack: I’ll do so another time. (так і зроблю наступного разу)
The story-teller: On Thursday, Jack went out again and hired himself to the farmer. (У четвер Джек найнявся до фермера)
Farmer: You worked hard. Take a cat for your work. (Ти працював наполегливо. Візьми кота за свою роботу)
The story-teller: Jack took the cat. He carried the cat in his hands but in a short time the cat scratched him so much that he let it go. (Джек взяв кота. Він ніс кота в руках, але через деякий час кіт пошкрябав його так, що він випустив його)
Mother: What was the matter? What has happened to you? (Що з тобою сталося?)
Jack: I got a cat for my work. I carried it very carefully in my hands, but the cat scratched me so much that I let it go and it ran away. (я отримав кота за свою роботу. Я ніс його в руках дуже обережно, але кіт пошкрябав мене так сильно, що мені довелось випустити його)
Mother: You silly boy, you should have tied a string to it, and dragged it along after you. (Ти нетямущий хлопець, ти повинен був прив’язати його і вести за собою)
Jack: I'll do so another time. (Так і зроблю наступного разу)
The story-teller: On Friday, Lazy Jack again went out, and hired himself to the farmer. (У п’ятницю, лінивий Джек знову найнявся до фермера)
Farmer: You worked hard. Take some meat for your work. (ти працював наполегливо. Візьми трохи м’яса за свою роботу)
The story-teller: Jack took the meat, tied a string to it, and dragged it along after him. By the time he got home, the meat was dirty and quite spoilt. (Джек взяв м’ясо, прив’язав його і потягнув за собою. За час поки він йшов додому, м’ясо стало брудним і зіпсованим)
Mother: You foolish boy, you should have carried it on your shoulder. (Ти дурний хлопець, ти повинен був нести його на плечах)
The story-teller: On Sаturday, Lazy Jack again went out, and hired himself to the farmer. ( У суботу, лінивий Джек знову найнявся до фермера)
Farmer: You worked hard. Take a donkey for your work. (Ти працював наполегливо. Візьми вісьлюка за свою роботу)
The story-teller: Jack put the donkey on his shoulders and began to walk slowly home. Now it happened that on his way home he passed the house of a rich man. This man has an only daughter. She was very beautiful but she cannot speak. She has never laughed in her life, and the doctors have said she will never speak till somebody makes her laugh. (Джек поклав віслюка на плечі і повільно пішов додому. Так сталося, що його дорога пролягала через будинок багатого чоловіка. Цей чоловік мав єдину доньку. Вона була дуже гарною, але не розмовляла. Вона ніколи не сміялась в своєму житті. І лікар сказав, що вона не почне говорити до тих пір поки хтось не змусить її засміятись))
Scene II
Rich man: look at that young man. He’s trying to carry a donkey on his shoulder. Ha-ha-ha! Oh, she’s laughing! She’s laughing! She’ll begin to speak now, I hope. Thank you very much, young man. (Поглянь на того молодика! Він намагається нести віслюка на своїх плечах. О! Вона сміється, вона почне тепер говорити, я сподіваюсь. Дуже тобі дякую, молодий чоловіче)
Jack: What is she laughing at? (з чого вона сміється?)
Daughter: Ha-ha-ha! How funny he is, with that donkey on his shoulder. I’ll never stop laughing! (Який він кумедний з тим віслюком на плечах. Я ніколи не перестану сміятись)
Rich man: you have made her laugh, and now she can speak. You may marry her if you like. (ти розсмішив їх, тепер вона може говорити. Ти можеш одружитися з нею, якщо хочеш)
Jack: l’m willing. I’ll marry your daughter. She’s beautiful. (Я готовий. Я одружусь з вашою донькою. Вона у вас гарна.)
The story-teller: Jack and his beautiful wife lived in a large house, and Jack's mother lived with them in great happiness. They lived happily for a long time. (Джек і його прекрасна дружина жили довго та щасливо у великому будинку разом з Джековою матір’ю)
