HALLOWEEN PARTY

PRESENTER 1: Good evening, dear guests!

PRESENTER 2: Welcome to our party!

PRESENTER 1: Today we have a Halloween party, celebrated in Great Britain and in America. In Europe the night of the ghosts and witches was combined with the Christian holiday. As that night fell on October 31, people called it Halloween. The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, autumn officially ended on October 31 and beginning of winter. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year.

Presenter 2:  Celtic priests, the Druids, thought that Halloween was the night when the witches came out. And as they were afraid of the witches they put on different clothes and painted their faces to get the evil spirits. They also placed food and small gifts near the doors of their houses for the witches. This was the beginning of the expression “trick or treat”.

Presenter 1: On Halloween, people often go to the parties at which fortunes are read and ghosts stories are told. Children may dress up in the costumes and masks of witches, goblins or skeletons and go trick – or – treating. They ring doorbells and ask for candy, apples, or coins.
If they don’t receive a treat, they may play a trick.

Presenter 2: At night on October 31 witches fly on their broomsticks, skeletons rattle their bones, ghosts frighten people, Jack – O’ – Lanterns walk around houses, black Halloween cats play tricks with us.

(Behind the speaker in the back of the stage there appears a “ghost”, listening to what she says, moves quietly and disappears.)

Presenter 1: Witches prepared different potions (снадобья) and told magic spells:

Зявляється відьма на мітлі, вигукуючи страшні звуки.

Witch: Hello, my dear! You called me? And I’m here. Were all of you naughty and bad? If not, I’ll make a trick with you.

 Йде до казана, читає закляття

Bubbling, bubbling, bubbling pot
Add some bat wings and then what?
Mix and mix until you’ve got
A new monster ugly and hot.
Bubbling, bubbling, bubbling pot,
Turn a rat into a frog,
Turn a cat into a log,
Bubbling, bubbling, bubbling pot.

Presenter 2: Well, now we know that witches fly on their brooms, and what about Jack – O’ – Lantern? The jack-o-lantern, most typical of Halloween symbols, began with the Irish. According to legend a man named Jack was expelled from Hell for playing tricks on the devil. He was to walk the earth forever carrying a lantern to light his way waiting for Judgment Day. Modern jack-o-lanterns are made from big orange pumpkins.

Witch: Oh, I see that Jack O’Lantern is coming here to join our party! (вигукує, дивлячись у казан)

Зявляється Джек

Witch: Will you tell us your story?

Jack O’Lantern:  Hi everybody. My name is Jack. I’ve been walking around the Earth for hundreds of years. I am so tired. People don’t like me, but I want to talk to them. I am so glad to come to your party. One of the ancient traditions on Halloween was story telling. I know so many interesting stories. But I’m so tired of constant going. So I want some evil spirits to help me.

2d witch: I’m sure, you do! But you should also know that we can fly everywhere and do everything.

1st witch: Oh, somebody is coming! Maybe, all the 4 witches will come. They are so funny when they quarrel. And they always quarrel.

Hingema: I am the greatest witch here. My name is Hingema. I’m sure, you’ve heard of me. Look around and see a wonderful land which is MINE!

Stella: My name is Stella and I’m the greatest fairy in the world.

Hingema: This is my country! I was the first to come here.

Stella: Let’s not quarrel! This country is big enough for all of us.

Bastinda: You are all wrong. I’m the greatest witch of the world! And I don’t want to share with anyone. Even , with you, my sister Hingema.  So, be careful if you argue with me! Either…

 Hingema: Either what?..

Bastinda: Either…. I’ll make you suffer.

Hingema: Make a frog or a bat of me?

Bastinda: No, darling. It’s too simple and primitive. May be a spider…. So, don’t make me nervous!.

Villina: Excuse me for interrupting you, but I think that it is very bad to quarrel. This is my magic book. I’ll look into it and tell you what all of you must do. The book says we mut not quarrel. We have to be together if we don’t want to be defeated.

Hingema: I don’t want to be defeated.

Bastinda: Let’s not quarrel any more.

Villina: We must be friendly to each other.

Witch: No, darling. It can’t be raining today. The moon is bright tonight.

Black Cat: But it’s so wet and nasty. And there are pools outside this hall.

Witch: Pools? Oh, it might be my sister – sea witch Voopery.

В зал заходить Вупері  та Меркурій з дочками.

Voopery: My greetings to you, sister. It’s really cool holiday night.

Witch: Glad to see you, Voopery. Who’s that with you?

Voopery: Meet my fellow Mercury. And those are my daughters (I’ve told you about them).

Witch: Mercury, tell us something about yourself.

Mercury: Hello, friends. My name is Mercury. I live in the river. I don’t like it, as it is very dirty. But there are also a lot of wonderful things in my river. Come one day with a fishing rod and you’ll catch something extraordinary

Witch: A mermaid? (laughing). Well, girls will you say something or you’re still holding water in your mouths?

Mermaid 1: No, aunty. We’re going to recite Halloween poems.

Witch: And now you…

Mermaid 2:

Witch: Great! What a scarying poems! I hope, now you believe that witches are powerful and can do a lot of harmful things.

Hingema: We feel pleased when children disobey their parents. We are thrilled when they lie and tell them that nobody has done anything wrong.

Bastinda: We teach children to be bad. We do a lot of harmful things. Here, among us, is one of the best-known bad creatures, a Vampire.

The Vampire: Hello, beasty boys and ghastly girls. Are you glad to see me? I think you are. Are you scared? I know, you are. You know what I have – these teeth! I’ll come to you and bite your necks… One by one… I need blood! Blood!... I feel it. I must go, my lady. I need blood before the dawn comes.

Witch: Yes, Dracula, you’re right. It’s the time for going trick-or-treat. Hey, friends, those evil spirits! Come here to say good bye to our guests.

It’s Halloween

It’s Halloween! It’s Halloween!
The moon is full and bright.
And we shall see what can’t be seen

On any other night!

Skeletons and ghosts and ghouls
Grinning goblins fighting duels
Werewolves rising from their tombs,

Witches on their magic brooms.

In masks and gowns we haunt the street
And knock on doors for trick or treat.
Tonight we are the king and queen,

For all tonight it’s Halloween!

После этого на сцене танец “ведьмочек”.

Presenter 1: So, dear guests, our Halloween party comes to the very end.

Presenter 2: See you in  a year. Thank you for attention.
