                    Quiz:   “THE BEST ENGLISH LEARNER”

    Objectives:

  •      to practise and improve pupils’ skills in speaking, reading writing and listening;
  •      to check up pupils’ grammar skills;
  •      to revise the vocabulary on the topics “Food”, “Sport”, “Holidays”, “Travelling”, “London”, “Ukraine”;
  •      to teach pupils to work in groups;
  •      to develop pupils’ logical thinking, creative abilities, imagination;
  •      to bring up speaking culture, and the desire to study English language.

  Visual Aids:  cards with tasks, pictures, slides.                                                                                                        

                                        PROCEDURE

I. Preliminaries

1. Greeting and Aim

   T: Good morning, dear pupils! I’m very glad to see you today. How are you?

 I hope that you are fine and ready for our lesson. It will be an unusual lesson – the competition between the teams of the sixth forms. Now I want to introduce the participants of our competition, the pupils who love and know English. So, meet the teams and their captains. I wish you good luck and success. Be very attentive and don’t be afraid, everything will be all right.

2. Warming up

  Now, look at the blackboard. There is a sentence here. But all the words in it are written together. Try to divide these words and read this sentence.

      Howmanylanguagesyouknowsomanytimesyouareaman.

So, this is the motto of our lesson.

II. The Main Part of the Lesson

    ROUND I

T: Let’s start our competition. The first round is very easy and very difficult at the same time, because you must complete the proverbs! You will answer one by one.  If one of the teams is wrong the second team will have a chance to answer. For every correct ending 1 point will be given to you.

1. He laughs best …                                                 then speak

2. East or west …                                                     is a friend indeed

3. Better late …                                                        like home

4. First think …                                                        keeps the doctor away

5. A friend in need …                                               in its season

6. There is no place …                                             who laughs last

7. An apple a day …                                                 home is best

8. Everything is good …                                           than never

T: ROUND II. Thank you, your answers were perfect. And now we’ll pass to the second round.  Here are some sentences. All of them have grammar mistakes. Your task is to correct them. For every corrected mistake you will get 1 point.

Sentences:

1. We see a football match last night.

2. The giraffe is more taller than the elephant.

3. Betty is the most prettiest girl in her form.

4. Tom didn’t went to the cinema yesterday.

5. John don’t like hamburgers.

6. We wasn’t happy yesterday.

7. My hands is clean.

8. May I have a apple, please?

T: ROUND III. Do you like to guess the puzzles? Of course, you do. That is   

    the third round. I’ll read a puzzle to both teams one by one. You have to answer 

    it quickly and correctly. Is it clear? So let’s start. For every correct answer 2 

    points will be given to you.

1. It has no legs but just for fun, it always on the run. (a ball)

2. It is white, cold and sweet. All children like to eat. (ice-cream)

3. It is red and sweet. It is good to eat. (an apple)

4. It has four legs, but it is not an animal. (a table)

5. An old with 12 children, some short, some long, some cold, some hot. (a year)

6. Five sons with one name. (fingers)

7. It is not a man, it is not a woman, but it teaches me. (a book)

8. What year lasts only one day? (New Year)

T: ROUND IV. Now, the task for the captains. So, be attentive I have two envelopes with the tasks. You have to write as many words as you can on the topic from the envelope. Each team will have 1 point for every correct item.

                            TOPICS “Holidays” and “Food”

T: ROUND V. Your next round is: you have to answer the questions in turn. For every correct answer you’ll get1 point.

1. The opposite of cold is …

2. The opposite of bad is…

3. What is the last month of the year?

4. What month comes before March?

5. How many minutes are there in an hour?

6. How many hours are there in a day?

7. What is the past form of “come”, “speak”?

8. What is the past form of “go”, “make”?

T: ROUND VI. Do you like sports? I think you do, because everybody wants to be healthy, strong and beautiful. So, I’ll read you the description of different sports and games and you try to guess what it is. For every correct answer 2 points will be given.

  1. A sport in which two people fight, each trying to throw the other on the ground. (Wrestling)
  2. It is a team game. Both men and women can play it. The players have a ball. They play it with their hands. There are six players in every team. (Volleyball)
  3. It is a game for two players. Each of them starts with sixteen different playing pieces to move on the board. The aim is to move your pieces so that your opponent’s king will be taken. (Chess)
  4. A slow run for exercising. (Jogging)
  5. It is a game played between two teams of eleven players. Players kick a ball around a field trying to score a goal. The team with the most points wins. This game is very popular in our country and all over the world. (Football)
  6. It is one of the most popular games in the world. It was first played in Canada. It is a team game. It is a winter game. Only men and boys can play it. Many people like to watch this game on TV. The players don’t run on the field. They skate. They have clubs in their hands. (Hockey)
  7. This game is played on a court with a large orange ball. There are five players in each team. Two teams try to score goals by throwing a ball through a net fixed to a metal ring at each end of a court. The players bounce the ball while running and pass to each other. The team with the most points wins. (Basketball)
  8. This kind of sport is very beautiful. It gives the sportsmen strength, rhythm and grace. The sportsmen do some exercises or dance to the music. The sportsmen have skates and beautiful costumes on. (Figure-skating)

T: ROUND VII. Do you like travelling? Which types of travel have you tried? (Plane, boat, hitch-hiking, ship, train, car …). Which do you like best? Why?

So, I’ll read you the description of different kinds of travelling and you must guess what it is? For every correct answer you’ll get 1 point.

  1. It is the fastest way of travelling. You can get from one town to another in almost no time. The seats are comfortable. Sometimes you cannot see anything through the window, only the sky and the clouds. When it rains very hard, you can’t travel by it. (by plane)
  2. This way of travelling is rather fast. You can start your journey when you like, stop at any place you like and go where you like. You don’t buy tickets, you only buy gas for travelling. Usually families travel by it. (by car)
  3. Young people, students and schoolchildren like this way of travelling. They don’t buy tickets and don’t use any transport. They put on sport shoes or trainers, jeans and T-shirts, take their rucksacks with them and start. Usually they walk through the countryside or the forest, live in tents and cook on the campfire. (on foot)
  4. This way of travelling is not very fast, but very pleasant. You travel by water. Some people don’t like travelling in such a way, because they become seasick. This is a very nice way of travelling in summer. You can enjoy seagulls, waves and fresh air. (by ship)

     T: ROUND VIII. Now, let’s pass to the sixth round .You’ll have to answer some questions about Great Britain and Ukraine. For every correct answer 2 points will be given.

  1. What is the capital of Great Britain?
  2. Where is London situated?
  3. How many parts does London consist of?
  4. What is the richest part of London?
  5. What is the capital of Ukraine?
  6. Where is Ukraine situated?
  7. What seas is Ukraine washed by?
  8. What mountains are there in Ukraine?

T: ROUND IX. Now, look at these pictures and try to guess the places of interest   of London. For every correct answer you’ll also get 1 point.  (Big Ben, Tower Bridge, Tower of London, The Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Piccadilly Circus, St. Paul’s Cathedral, London Eye, Trafalgar Square, Madame Tussauds Waxmuseum, Double-Decker Bus, Taxi, St. James’s Park)   

T: ROUND X. So, the last task is for the captains of both teams. Imagine that you   are the guide in London. Tell your group about London. For this task 10 points will be given if everything is correct.

III. The Final Part of the Lesson

      Summerizing

    T: - Now we have finished all the tasks and its time to announce the winner. According to the scores we can congratulate the team of the 6 “   ” form with the victory and present them with golden medals “The best English learner”. And another team also receives silver medals “Good English learner”.
