The Subject:                       Sports and Games in Our Life

 

The Objectives:       -to develop students’ communicative and writing skills, 

                                 -to train them in reading and listening comprehension;

                                 -to develop students’ thinking, creative imagination; 

                                  interactive communication;

                                 -to develop students’ interest in sport.

 

Visual Aids: cards, instructions, pictures on the topic “Sport”, a crossword.

 

                                        PROCEDURE

       I. Preliminaries

1. Greeting and Aim

T: Good morning, my dear children. I am very glad and happy to see all of you 

      today. I am sure you are ready for active work. Our topic today is “Sports                                 

      and Games in Our Life”.

 2. Phonetic Drill

      So, let’s make up a poem (Acrostic)

                Sport is very cool

                People think it’s good

                Only swimming pool

                Really raises mood

                Try to do it!

T: And what word we’ve got? Yes, it’s sport.

3. Warming up                                                                     

  1.      Now, answer the questions, please.

T:  -    Do you like sports?

  •          Is sport very important in our life?
  •          What kind of sport do you go in for? Why?
  •          Do you train hard?
  •          Do you want to be a champion?
  •          How long have you been playing it?
  •          Do you attend any sport clubs?
  •          Where do you train?
  •          Have you won any contests or competitions?
  •          Do you like to play games or do you like to watch them?
  •          Why is sport so popular with schoolchildren?

P1: -   Sport makes people healthy, more organized, keeps them fit.

T:   -   Do you know the famous Ukrainian sportsmen?

P2: -   Yaroslava Mahuchykh goes in for athletics.

P3: -   Oleksandr Usyk goes in for boxing.

P4: -   Olha Kharlan goes in for fencing.

P5: -   Liudmyla Luzan goes in for kayaking and canoeing.

T:  -    What kinds of winter sports do you know? (skating, skiing, tobogganing,

          hockey)

  •          Do you like to play snowballs, to make a snowman?
  •          Did you do it last month, when everything was covered with a thick

layer of snow?

 a)   T:   -   Let’s continue our talk and tell me please, what do you do to be healthy? 

          What do you suggest your friend should do to keep fit?

    Discuss it in pairs.

        Possible answers;

 - get rid of bad habits;

 - do much exercise;

 - avoid eating junk food;

 - eat vitamins;

 - go in for sports.

2. Speaking

Game “Microphone”.

T: OK. Now, we’ll play a game “Microphone” your task will be to answer the question quickly and give the imagine microphone (it may be a pen) to another pupil in turn.

  •          So, answer the following question: “Why do people go in for sport?”

     P1: Sports help people to be healthy. Because health is better than wealth.

     P2: We go in for sports because we want to be strong, vigorous, active. … 

 

 

                                                                                                              

 

 

 

 

 

  1. Reading                                                                                                                                  Now, take the cards and read the text attentively, after that you’ll do another task.

                                            Peter Goes in for Sport                                                                           

     Peter is a schoolboy. He is a very good pupil and friend, but he likes to eat cakes very much. He eats cakes at school, he eats them at home. He eats cakes in the morning and in the evening. Sometimes he eats cakes even at the lessons at school.                                                 

     One day Peter looked in the mirror and saw how fat he was. He didn’t like himself. Peter decided to correct the situation.                                                                                                               

     It was Sunday. Peter put on his sport shoes and trainers and went to the park. In the park the girls were skipping. Peter skipped with the girls. On Monday he went to the stadium. Some boys from Peter’s yard were running a race. So Peter took part in their competitions too. On Tuesday Peter went to the school sports ground. The pupils were playing football and Peter played football with them. On Wednesday he went to the school gym and played volleyball together with the other boys. On Thursday Peter went to the swimming pool and swam there with other boys and girls for two hours. On Friday he played tennis and badminton in the yard. And on Saturday Peter did his morning exercises for half an hour. On Sunday Peter looked in the mirror and he liked himself.

  1. Physical Activity

You have worked hard and now you may relax.

  1. Listening

T: Now, maybe somebody of you knows riddles about different kinds of sports?

     Please! Listen and guess. What kind of sport is this? Be attentive!

  1.     It is a team game. Both men and women can play it. The players have a ball. They play it with their hands. There are six players in every team.

                                                                                       (Volleyball)

  1.     It is the most popular game in Ukraine and in England. Both men and women can play it. The game lasts for 90 minutes. It has two halves. The players kick the ball and run after it. The players try to score a goal.

                                                                                      (Football)

  1.     It is one of the most popular games in the world. It was first played in Canada. It is a team game. It is a winter game. Only men and boys can play it. Many people like to watch this game on TV. The players don’t run on the field. They skate. They have clubs in their hands.

                                                                                      (Hockey)

  1.     This kind of sport is very beautiful. It gives the sportsmen strength, rhythm and grace. The sportsmen do some exercises or dance to the music. The sportsmen have skates and beautiful costumes on.

                                                                                       (Figure-skating)

  1.     This game is played everywhere in Ukraine: at school, universities and sports clubs. It was first played in the USA. The team has 5 players. They bounce the ball on the floor up and down with one hand. They try to throw the ball into a basket.

                                                                                         (Basketball)

         III. The Final Part of the Lesson

      1. Home assignment

T: Make a project “My favourite kind of sport”.

     And now, listen to the poem.

                                   Sport is fun for girls and boys.

                                   It’s much better than the toys.

                                   You can swim and play football

                                   Hockey, tennis, basketball.

                                   You can jump and you can run,

                                   You can have a lot of fun!

  1. Summarizing

 Dear children! Today we have spoken about sports and games in our life. I’d like to say it was interesting. You worked hard and I’m satisfied with your answers.
