But he understood that Ukrainian people would need to fight for freedom. In 1840 he published his first book of poems entitled «Kobzar». In his famous "Testament" he wrote:
And in a great new family,
The family of the free,
With softy spoken, kindly words,
Pray, men, remember me.
The "Testament" ended on a hopeful note that one day Ukraine would become free. Taras Shevchenko was the founder of a new Ukrainian literature. He established Ukrainian as the national literary language. He showed the world its beauty and force.

Beyond the village on the lea.
The magic of the sun, perhaps,
Or what was it affected me?
I felt with joy all overcome,
As though with God....
2. T.: When I die, let me be buried
In my beloved Ukraine,
My tomb upon a grave-mound high,
Amid the wide-spread plain,
That the fields, the steppe unbounded,
The Dnieper’s plunging shore
My eye could see, my ear could hear
The mighty river roar,
3.T.: Then quietly she smiled, poor mother…
She started up…all gone forever!
She looked at little Ivan, then
Picked him up, swaddled him again,
And, ere it reached the bailiff's ken,
Went off, her sixty sheaves to gather
