 Lesson Plan: Ukraine is a European Country (CLIL Methodology) 

Grade: 8 

Level: Intermediate 

Duration: 45 minutes 

Lesson Objectives: 

- Content Objective: 

  Students will learn about Ukraine as a European country, its geographical location, cultural features, and European integration. 

- Language Objective: 

  Students will practice vocabulary related to geography, culture, and European Union concepts. They will also develop skills in speaking, reading, and writing in English. 

- Cognitive Objective: 

  Students will develop critical thinking by analyzing Ukraine's role in Europe and discussing its contributions. 

Materials: 

- Text about Ukraine 

- Blank maps of Europe 

- Quiz (Kahoot or paper-based) 

 

                                          Lesson Procedure:

1. Warm-up (5 minutes) 

- Teacher's Question: 

  - “What do you know about Europe? Which countries are in Europe?” 

  - “Where is Ukraine located?” 

- Activity: Word Cloud 

  Students brainstorm words related to Ukraine and Europe (e.g., is called, geography, location, border on, Kyiv, EU, traditions…).The words are written on the board. 

 

2. Introduction to the Topic (10 minutes) 

- Reading Activity: 

  Students read a short texts in small groups (provided by the teacher): 

 e.g., "Ukraine is the largest country in Europe. It is located in Eastern Europe, bordered on Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and other countries. Kyiv is its capital. Ukraine is famous for its rich culture, historical landmarks, and natural beauty. Since 2014, Ukraine has been working on European integration to become closer to the European Union." 

- Comprehension Questions: 

  - “What is the capital of Ukraine?” 

  - “Which countries does Ukraine border on?” 

  - “What is European integration?” 

3. Pair Work: Map Activity (10 minutes) 

- Activity: Label the Map 

  - Each pair receives a blank map of Europe. 

  - Task 1: Label Ukraine and its neighbouring countries. 

  - Task 2: Discuss with your partner why Ukraine is considered a part of Europe. 

- Language Focus: 

  Phrases like "It is located in...", "Ukraine shares borders with...", "Ukraine belongs to Europe because...".

 

4. Interactive Game: Quiz on Ukraine (10 minutes) 

- Activity: Kahoot or Class Quiz 

  - Sample Questions: 

    1. What is the capital of Ukraine? 

    2. Name one traditional Ukrainian dish. 

    3. Which sea is in the south of Ukraine? 

    4. What colours are on the Ukrainian flag? 

- The team with the most correct answers wins. 

 

 5. Reflection and Wrap-Up (5 minutes) 

- Reflection Questions: 

  - “What new facts about Ukraine have you learnt today?” 

  - “How is Ukraine similar to or different from other European countries?” 

- Exit Ticket: 

  Students write 2-3 sentences about why Ukraine is a European country. 

 Assessment: 

- Participation in pair and group activities 

- Responses to comprehension questions 

- Exit tickets 

 

This lesson plan integrates content and language, allowing students to develop both their subject knowledge and English proficiency.
