1. Teacher’s Opening
Teacher says:
Good morning, students!
Today our topic is Reading. Musical Instruments.
Music is very important in our life:
Today we will talk about music, listen to sounds, watch a phonics video, sing a song, listen to a poem and read the poem ‘Here’s the band’.
By the end of the lesson you will be able to name musical instruments and talk about music you like.
2. Warming Up – Talking about Music
Teacher’s explanation:
First, I will ask you some questions about music.
Whole-class questions:
Teacher encourages short answers: Yes, I do / No, I don’t.
Teacher’s cultural note (short talk):
Teacher says:
We are learning English. English is the language of the United Kingdom.
Scotland is part of the United Kingdom.
The national musical instrument of Scotland is the bagpipes.
Now let’s listen to the sound of the bagpipes.”
Teacher plays a short bagpipes sound.
Pair Work – Talking about Favourite Music
Teacher’s explanation:
Now you will work in pairs. Ask your partner questions about favourite singers and bands. Then change roles.
Questions for pair work:
Students work in pairs.
Teacher listens and helps if needed.
Teacher’s personal example:
Teacher says:
I like music very much.
My favourite band is Imagine Dragons because they support Ukraine at their concerts.
I also like the Ukrainian band Okean Elzy because their songs are patriotic.
Guessing Game – Guess the Instrument (by sound)
Teacher’s explanation:
Now listen carefully. You will hear a sound. Guess the musical instrument.

3. Phonics – The sound -ight
Teacher’s explanation:
Now we will learn a special English sound. When we see the letters i-g-h together, we read them as /aɪ/.
The letters g and h are silent. We don’t say them.
Video activity:
Teacher plays a short phonics video with –igh words (light, night, bright, might).

Students watch and repeat the sounds together with the video.
Mini-activity: Clap the Sound
Teacher says:
When you hear the –igh sound, clap your hands.
Teacher says: light, music, band, night, right, bright, clap, stamp, might.
Students clap for light, night, bright, might.
4. Song "I Am the Music Man" – Singing with Actions
Teacher’s explanation:
Now we will sing a fun song about music. When we sing and move, it is easier to remember the words. Watch me and do the actions together with the song.
Activity:
Teacher plays the song “I Am the Music Man” (PB p.72)
Students sing together and do actions:
Teacher repeats the chorus once more.
Teacher asks:
5. Pre-reading Poem “Here’s the band”
Teacher says: There are different types of musical instruments. Wind instruments are instruments we play by blowing air into them, for example: flutes, trumpets and trombones. Percussion instruments are instruments we play by hitting or shaking them, for example: drums and tambourines.
Critical thinking activity: Teacher says: Look at the bagpipes. Do we blow air or hit them? Are bagpipes wind instruments or percussion instruments? Make a conclusion.

Teacher says: A brass band is a group of musicians. They usually play wind instruments, like trumpets and trombones, and percussion instruments, like drums.
6. Listening Activity
Teacher’s explanation:
Before we read, we will listen to a poem. Listening helps us understand the text better.
While Listening
Task: underline all musical instruments in the text and circle the number of the instruments.
