The subject of the lesson.  Christmas  in Great Britain.

The objectives: to enrich and practice pupils'  vocabulary on topic;

                          to practice students' skills in reading, speaking and listening;

    to develop the feeling of responsibility for the group;

    to bring up the respect to folk traditions and customs.

Equipment:  textbooks,  pictures,  handouts.

The Procedure of the lesson.

  1. Greeting. Introduction of the lesson.

 Pupils sing “Greeting song”. (the 1st -2nd  slide)

Teacher: Good morning, I am glad to see you today. How  are you  today?

Pupils: Very well ( the answers of pupils)

Teacher:  The topic of our lesson is “Christmas   in Great Britain”. (the 3d   slide)

At our lesson we shall compare traditions and customs in different countries. By the end of the lesson you’ll be able to speak about holidays in our country and in  Great Britain.

2. Pronunciation

Teacher:  Look at the board and  repeat  the  tongue – twisters. Pay attention to the pronunciation of sounds. ( the 4th  – 9th slides)

3.Warming  up.

 a)  Jump Game

Teacher:  Stand at your desks, please.  I hold up a flashcard from the vocabulary set and say a word.  If the word is the same as the flashcard, you jump and repeat the word.  If  it  isn’t  you  keep still.

Example: a cake, a stocking, a Christmas Tree, Father Frost, a postcard, a present…

b)  Dialogical speech

Teacher:  Let’s start with asking and answering the questions according to the topic: “Winter holidays”, using such expressions as:
It’s interesting to know...

Can you tell me...

Do you know...

I want to know...

Tell me, please...

(the  10th slide)

So, pupils, ask and answer the questions. Mind your intonation. Please, start.

P1 – It’s interesting to know when do Ukrainian people celebrate New Year and Christmas?

P2 – Ukrainian people celebrate New Year and Christmas in winter. Can you tell me how do they decorate their houses?

P3 – They decorate their houses with toys, flags and balls. Do you know who brings presents to little children?

P4  - Father Frost and Snow Maiden bring presents to little children. I want to know do the children make postcards?

P5- Yes, they do. Tell me, please, what do people wish their relatives and friends?

P6 – They wish them a Happy New Year and a Merry Christmas.

Teacher.  So, you see. “So many countries so many customs”.

”Every country has its customs”.

These are proverbs of our lesson. Remember them. (the  11th slide)

4.Check on Homework.  p.80 Ex.1 (learn the poem)

5. Presentation. Reading

Listen and read ( p.82 Ex.1)

Pre-reading ( the  12th slide)

Teacher. Look at the picture and say what holiday is it?

P1. It’s Christmas.

Teacher. Who can we see at the picture?

P2. We can see Santa Clause.

Teacher. Lets read the text about how do British  people celebrate Christmas.

  1. Choral and individual repetition of difficult words. (the  13th slide)
  2. Pupils listen then read the text in silence.

While-reading

  1. Pupils read the text in a chain.

Teacher. When do British  people celebrate Christmas?

P1 – They celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December.

Teacher. What do people decorate their homes with?

P2 - They decorate their homes with Christmas trees, toys, flags and lights.

Teacher. Who brings presents to children?

P3- Santa Clause brings presents to children.

Teacher. How do people celebrate Christmas?

P4 - They dance, sing Christmas songs, play games and have fun.

 Agree or disagree. (the  14th slide)

  1. In Britain people celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January.

P1- I disagree with the statement, because they celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December.

  1. They decorate their homes with Christmas trees, toys, flags and lights.

P2- I agree with it.

  1. Father Frost brings presents to children.

P3- I disagree with it. Santa Clause brings presents to British children.

  1. Many families have parties.

P4- I agree with it.

  1. They dance and  paint Easter eggs.

P5- I disagree with it. They dance, sing Christmas songs, play games and have fun.

 

6. Physical Activity

Teacher. What Christmas songs do you know?

Let’s sing a wonderful song “We wish you a Merry Christmas”.

 Pupils sing the song. (the  15th slide)

 

7. Listening

1) Pre-listening activity.

Teacher:   Let's visit the Parkers. We’ll watch the video about celebrating Christmas. Be ready to answer the questions:               ( the 16th slide)

  1. What do Ann and Jim  do on Christmas Eve?
  2. What do the children do in the morning?
  3. What do they have at two o’clock?
  4. What is the National Christmas meal?
  5. Who comes to the party?
  6. What do they pull ?
  7. What do they wish each other?

  Pay attention to the unknown words. Let’s read and explain them.

  1. to hang - вішати
  2. а fireplace – камін
  3. to pull - тягнути
  4. Christmas cracker - різдвяна хлопавка

2) Listening . “Christmas Eve”  ( the 17th slide)

 3) Post-listening activities.

Teacher:   And now  answer the questions. ( the 16th slide)

  1. P1 – Ann and Jim hang Christmas stocking above the fireplace.
  2. P2- Children open their presents.
  3. P3-They have a Christmas dinner at two o’clock.
  4. P4- It’s Christmas pudding.
  5. P5 – Their grandparents come to the party.
  6. P6 – They pull Christmas crackers.
  7. P7 -They wish each other “a Merry Christmas.”

8.Speaking. (p.83 Ex.4)

Teacher.  -  Read the words in boxes.

  • Match the words with the pictures. Read the example.

Pair work.

Teacher: Make sentences about Alex using the pictures and the words.

Some pairs read their examples:

Ps. Alex usually writes invitations for Christmas.

Ps. He always decorate his home with a Christmas tree, toys, flags and lights.

Ps.  Sometimes Alex buys products.

Ps. He often phones his relatives and friends.

9. Writing

Group work

Teacher. Let’s divide into four groups. Your task is to complete the sentences with the words from Ex.4 . Use each word once only . Do it orally at first.

Then, some pupils from different groups write the sentences on the board. Others write them down into their exercise-books.

  1. We must … our houses before the party.
  2. Tom always …a Christmas tree at home.
  3. Ann usually … and…New Year cards to all her friends.
  4. Do you often… your relatives?
  5. When does he…his presents?
  6. How much food do you usually …for the party?

10.Summing up ( the 18th slide)

Teacher: Think and  say what are the differences between British Christmas and Ukrainian New year?

P1. Santa Clause brings presents to British children but Father Frost comes to Ukrainian children.

 What is common in celebrating Christmas and New Year?

P2. British and Ukrainian people. decorate their homes with Christmas trees, toys, flags and lights.

P3. Many families have parties. They dance, sing Christmas songs, play games and have fun.

11. Home work

Write how your family celebrates New Year and Christmas.
