The seven days of the week are named in honour of the sun, the moon and 5 of the planets. The 5 planets are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. These were the only planets the people of long ago knew about.
Sunday is the sun’s day.
Monday is the moon’s day.
Tuesday is Mars’ day.
Wednesday is Mercury’s day.
Thursday is Jupiter’s day.
Friday is Venus’ day.
Saturday is Saturn’s day.
The planets are named for Roman gods and goddesses. Mars is the Roman god of war. Mercury is the messenger of the god. Jupiter is the king of the gods. Venus is the goddess of beauty. The names Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday come from Norse gods.
Tuesday is Tiu’s day.
Wednesday is Woden’s day.
Thursday is Thor’s day.
Friday is Frigg’s day.
There is no reason why we have 7 days in a week. If the people of long ago
had known about Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, we might have 10 days in a
week instead of 7.
