Topic: Health: a healthy way of life

 

 Health is above wealth

 

 

Objectives:

1. Educational: to broaden pupils’ look-out from the given topic “Health: a healthy way of life”.

  1. Practical: to form language competence in speaking, reading, to de­velop listening comprehension, to develop pupils’ project skills, to develop pupils' pair and group communicative skills, to reinforce topic items and pupils' knowledge on the topic.
  2. Developing: to develop pupils' at­tention and reaction, memory, log­ical thinking, creative abilities and talents.
  3. Up-bringing: to bring up care for one’s health, necessity for keeping fit and eating healthy food; to stimulate learners' interest in sub­ject.

Kind of lesson: Project work.

Equipment: Book “O. Karpiuk 6”, special cards for pair and group work, handouts, tables, proverbs and sayings, Workbook, CD, markers.

T. Good morning! Glad to see you! I hope you’ll like today's lesson, be-

cause we'Il speak about interesting and useful things.

 

I'd rather call our lesson the creative laboratory. Today you will show your

skills and abilities in making projects.

Look at the blackboard and read some proverbs and sayings.

 

. A sound mind in a sound body.

. Health is better than wealth.

. Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

 

T. Try to translate or give Ukrainian equivalents.

 

 -An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

-Laughter is the best medicine.

-Wealth is nothing without health.

-Good health is above wealth.

-One apple - no doctor.

-Live not to eat but eat to live.

-An early riser is sure to be in luck.

-Habit is the second nature.

-After dinner sit a while, after supper walk a mile.

-The early bird catches the warm.

 

T. That's splendid! I see that you know many English proverbs and you are

good pupils.

T. "Health is above wealth" the proverb says. When we are healthy we are strong, active and full of energy. We have to take care of health and do the things that are useful for us.

Schoolchildren should have nine hour's sleep every night. Children who do not

have enough sleep are always tired and sleepy. The human body also needs exercises. Walking, running, swimming and playing games are all exercises. Exercises keep the body strong. We also must eat healthy food.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are good because they have many vitamins in them.

Our bodies also need clean air to breathe. We must keep our bodies clean.

stay healthy and feel well.

 

P3. We want to make a poster "Food that gives us energy and helps us

grow".

T. I suggest you to study the subject through project work.

Before making it let's revise the main steps of project work.

P1. As far as I know we should make a plan, which helps us to make solutions on our problem.

T. I shall help you with some sources of information today. You have got the texts in your textbooks, some more additional texts on the topic, dictionaries, pictures. Now it's good time to start looking for necessary information for your projects. I’ll give some additional information to each group.

Dear friends, let us introduce our project to you now. But first we'd like you to guess these puzzles.

1) I can be red or yellow or green.

I grow in the tree in the garden.

I am tasty in the autumn and in winter. What am I? (Apple)

2) I am very small.

I grow in the orchard, I am ripe in summer.

My first letter is “C”.

Children like jam with me. What am I? (Cherry)

3) We are very tasty, when we are green.

We grow in the kitchen-garden.

People like to eat us with tomatoes in salads. What am I? (Cucumber)

 

P1. It is very important to eat healthy food. Your body needs six things to grow and be healthy: carbohydiates, fats, fibre, minerals, proteins and vitamins.

Carbohydrates give us energy. Fats give us energy and help to keep warm.

 

Fibre is very important for your body to work well.

 

Your body also needs twenty difrerent minerals. Proteins help vour bodv grow.

 

Vitamins help to keep you healthy.

 

P2. As for me, I think it is very important to eat healthy food and to get right balance of vitamins. For example, vitamin A which we get from eggs, milk

and green vegetables, is necessary for our growth, and for healthy skin and

eyes.

 

P2. Another good example is vitamin C. We get vitamin C from green vegeta-

 fruit, and potatoes. We need vitamin C for healthy skin,

 

 

We need vitamin C for healthy skin, bones and muscles.

 

P3. Food and drink also provide us with lots of important minerals – calcium and iron. We get calcium from milk and cheese. Calcium is important for building healthy teeth and bones. As for iron, we get that from liver, meat, fish, cereal and green vegetables. Iron helps to give us healthy blood.

Leader.  A lot of people are interested in how to make themselves healthy. They

try to find different ways. A very important factor is physical exercises. They help us to be fit and active. They make our body strong and keep us mentally well. If you want to be healthy you are to go in for sport and games. Those who go in for sport regularly are cheerful, active people full of energy.

 

Pl. Physically inactive people get old earlier than those who have plenty of

exercises. If you do daily exercises, you feel refreshed, you have a good posture

and that is good.

 

So, pay attention to the way you stand, walk and sit.

 

P2. We have written so-called "healthy" rules. We must know them to be healthy

l. We must wash our hands before meals.

2. We must keep our bodies clean.

3. We must get up early and do morning exercises.

4. We must get enough sleep.

5. We must breathe in as much fresh air as we can.

6. Take long walks in the open air as often as you can.

7. Keep your body clean and strong.

 

8. Keep your teeth clean.

9. Sleep with your window open.

10. Wear clean clothes.

11.  Eat healthy food.

12. Never smoke and drink alcohol.

Leader. What does it mean to be fit? The dictionary says that this expression

means to be in a good physical form. What do we need to be ht? Doctors explain that several things are important: what food we eat, how you take care of

your body and your clothes. What daily habits you have. How often you exercise. Their advice is that people should laugh and smile more often. When you

laugh and smile, your body relaxes.

 

Our group has written the test "The Healthy Way of Life" (see table). You

can test who has a healthier mode of life.
