Topic “Music”.

SubtopicMusic genres. At the concerts”.

Objectives: to increase the pupils’ motivation for English study and their cultural awareness aiming to use the skills in life.

Tasks: to aсhieve the subjects’ connection – English + Music (cultural aspect); to practise using the topical vocabulary; to develop listening, speaking and reading skills; to develop the student`s skills to make up dialogues about their preferences in music and act them out; to revise the modal verbs; to teach how to work in a team, to be responsible for personal actions and form one`s point of view; to develop the student`s skills to work with the information on the Internet, to choose the most important things from the rest of the material.

Equipment/Tools: a laptop, a TV screen/ multimedia,  a presentation, a textbook “English.8” by O.Karpyuk, worksheets, stickers for evaluation, digital resources, 2 cards with the names of the teams, a grid for the team work.

Learning outcomes: to know what influence music has on people`s lives; to name and distinguish the genres of music and musical instruments; to know how to behave at the concerts; to name the most famous contemporary Ukrainian groups; to know the soundtracks to the well-known films and cartoons.

Type of lesson: competition.

Lesson procedure

  1. The introduction.
  1. The greeting.
  • Good morning, my dear students. Hope you`re well.
  1. The topic. Goal setting.
  • Today we are going to have an extraordinary lesson. It will be a competition between 2 teams:  “Music lovers” and “Music experts”. Our competition will look like a staff. Each task is a note on it. Look at the screen and guess the theme of our today`s conversation (https://www.jigsawplanet.com/?rc=play&pid=1e2581a27fb9).
  • You are right. We are going to talk about music and its role in our lives. So, the topic of the lesson is “Music genres. At the concerts”.

  • What do you expect from our lesson? What would you like to get to know? What would you like to do? Put down some expectations on the stickers on your desks, please. For example:
  1.               I`d like to learn/practise some new vocabulary on the topic.
  2.               I wish to know the rules of attending a concert.
  3.               It will be good to watch a video about some famous musicians/bands/groups.
  4.               Doing exercises or playing an educational game will be ideal.
  5.               I prefer some group and pair work etc.
  • Don`t forget to evaluate your classmates` activity during the lesson.

  • What is music for you?
  • How often do you listen to it?
  • What genre of music do you prefer?
  • What kind of emotions does it evoke?
  • What do you feel listening to a symphony? A piece of jazz? Hip-hop?
  1. The main part of the lesson.
  • Do you know how music is created? Who writes it? What do they use? (Notes, instruments.)
  • You are going to compete and show who is the best in the sphere of music. You are to do all the tasks and make all the steps to win. Let`s show each other that we are good enough at playing games, listening, reading and collaborating.

  • How do we usually produce music? What do people use to compose it?
  • Look at the table with letters in the presentation and find as many musical instruments as possible.

  • How good are you at guessing the film by the tune or melody of it? Let`s see. Watch the video and listen to the soundtracks of the world-famous films. Name them, please.

  • Match the words and word combinations with their translations. Try and give the Ukrainian equivalents of the idiomatic expressions.

  • Do you prefer listening to the Ukrainian music rather than the foreign one? Why?

III. The end of the lesson.

  1. Summing up. Reflection.
  • Well, boys and girls, let`s sum up and find out who was wiser and more active in the sphere of music. (The teacher tells the score.)
  • Have your expectations come true? What have you learnt? What kind of knowledge is it necessary to widen? (The students read out their expectations and say if they are different.)
