Saint Valentine’s Day
There is an interesting legend about St. Valentine’s Day. A long time ago in Rome there was a priest named Valentine. At that time the Emperor of Rome was Claudius. He wasn’t very popular because he was trying to get more and more people for his army. The men didn’t want to go to the army and Claudius thought it was because they didn’t want to leave their wives and children. “If they don’t get married, they’ll join the army”, he thought and passed a law which banned marriage.
Valentine felt sorry for young people who were in love. He secretly married them. One night the Emperor’s soldiers caught him and put him in prison. Valentine was going to die.
Many young people felt sorry for Valentine and visited him in prison. One of them was the daughter of a prison guard. On the day of execution Valentine wrote a note to her and signed it “Love from Valentine”. Some people say it happened on the 14th of February.
Since then the 14th of February has been the Day of Love, when people send special cards with romantic messages. They don’t sign the cards with their names, but write “Guess Who” or “Your Valentine”.
Many poems are heard on this day: Let me call you sweetheart
I’m in love with you
Let me hear with you
That you love me too.
T: - Do you know a short poem devoted to this holiday? (вірш до свята учениця підготувала за бажанням)

Sugar is sweet
