Objectives:

To develop and practise writing skills (writing a comment).

To develop pupils’ writing accuracy by using expressions of agreement and disagreement.

To encourage pupils to think about the advantages and disadvantages of modern technology.

To work in a team to reach an agreement.

Outcomes:

By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to write the comment about advantages and disadvantages of modern technology using the expressions of agreement and disagreement.

Materials:

Teacher’s notes.

Modern technology, advantages/ disadvantages worksheet.

Plastic glasses and stripes of paper with the expressions of agreement and disagreement.

Small pictures with new technology gadgets for grouping.

Lesson plan

Introduction. Warmer.

Put learners into small groups by giving them the cards with the pictures of different gadgets or new technology. Their task is not to show the picture but to explain how the gadget is used or mime its functions.

There are sixteen cards to form four groups of four pupils.

Worksheet 1.

Pre-writing activities

Give each group the worksheet with one modern device. Ask them to work in group and to write two advantages and two disadvantages of the device on the worksheet.

Worksheet 2.

Ask them to exchange their worksheets with the other group.

Give each group three plastic glasses with the stickers; Agree. Disagree. Linking arguments. and stripes of paper with the expressions of agreement, disagreement and the words or word combinations that help to link arguments.

Worksheet 3.

Writing

Explain the learners that writing a comment is a new kind of writing communication between the author of the article or some blog post online. It is necessary to be able to write a perfect comment that can show your point of view but without insulting the author’s or other readers’ points of view.

A comment has a clear structure. You express your opinion and prove it with examples. It should not be too long but it has to show that you know what you are writing about. Write your name at the end.

Ask pupils to work in the same groups and write a comment on their partners’ opinion about the advantages and disadvantages of some new technology. They should follow the instructions and use the words from the worksheet 3.
