A NATURAL WORLD OF ZAPORIZHZHIAN REGION
Located in the steppe zone of the south-eastern part of Ukraine, Zaporizhzhian region has its unique nature. But you can find this singularity only in the reservation areas like the Island Khortytsia, the
Sandbar Obyticna and the Azov-Syvash National
Park. Due to the special microclimatic conditions formed by the mighty Dnipro, the flora and fauna of Khortytsia Island are rather interesting and considerably differ from the main land what makes them unique from the scientific point of view. On the island over a small land area covering about 30 square kilometers all types of Ukrainian landscapes are presented. There are 9 different natural systems. In the gills, tracts and flooded areas of the island grow 1100 species of higher plants.
The Sandbar Obytichna comprises 558 kinds of plants, 16 - endemic, 60 – rare. There are 53 various kinds of sea inhabitants and 34 mammals as well as 5 species of reptiles and 2 amphibians on the land.
Zaporizhzhia has been one of the largest industrial centres of Ukraine. Thanks to the available reserves of coal, iron ore, manganese, engineering, metallurgy, the chemical and heavy industry, automobile production and aircraft engines are concentrated here.
The residents of Zaporizhzhia complain about the high concentration of plants located directly in the city. They are technically obsolete and mostly date back to the 1930s. They discharge dust and gases into the atmosphere. As a result, people suffer from serious diseases and die younger. Moreover, it causes massive environmental pollution and even climate change. It also destroys the ozone layer.
In addition to it, the main highway also runs through the city centre. The data monitoring and publishing system appears to have been inadequate for a long time: there are only five measuring stations in the city. They control the level of dangerous chemicals in the air. The industrial part of Zaporizhzhia is located in the northeast of the city while the residential areas are in the south. The Soviet engineers did not consider the direction of the wind and therefore the winds from the north-east regularly carry harmful substances directly into the heart of the city .
In fact, Zaporizhzhia and Zaporizhzhia region are dramatically polluted due to the toxic wastes from the huge industrial enterprises. They affect the water we drink and the soil where the fruit and vegetables are grown.
There is the river Red called “Krasniuchka” because of its red colour. It flows in the centre of the city and everybody can watch this natural disaster. The main industrial factories dump poisonous wastes into it and there won’t be any fish soon.
Another problem we face nowadays is the dumpsites. The immense quantity of litter in the outskirts threatens the citizens’ health.
So, everything mentioned above shows that our commitment to modernize our life and poor attempts to
preserve the nature results in environmental issues. If everyone was environmentally aware, our native land would be a better place to live in.
