Theme : Shopping is Great

Aim: to develop speaking skills

  •          to revise previously taught vocabulary (shopping ), introduce money idioms, give free practice of a language point;
  •          to develop speaking, reading and listening skills, promote  interest in the culture;
  •          to create a relaxed atmosphere in the classroom

Outcome : students can talk about shopping and money(give their opinion)

Lesson Procedure

  1. Org.moment.
  2. Warm up activities.

Before we start, I’d like you to look at the words on the board: Harods, Harvey Nichols, Hamleys, Oxford Street, Lock and Co. Do you know what they mean? Please take your mobile phones and find some information about these department stores. You have two minutes.

 

  1. The main part.
  1.     Let’s watch a short video.

London has some of the world’s most famous department stores. The presenter  Richard visits them and also samples a smaller shop for a range of shopping experiences.

Before watching it, look through these tasks. See if  you can answer  the questions while you watch the video.

 

  1. Comprehension Task 1. In what order did Richard look at the following products?

              shoes                   teddy bear

              bowler hat           cheese

              chocolate             top hat

 

  1. Comprehension Task 2. Match the shops with their specialities.

What are the differences between shopping in London and shopping in your native city?

Tell us what you like about shopping in Ukraine and what could be better.

You know that shopping is impossible without money. Let’s talk about the history of money:

  •          Where were coins first used? What were they made of?
  •          How can we pay for our shopping today?
  •          What makes money valuable?
  •          Do you get pocket money? How much a week? What for?
  •          Do you earn money yourself ? Why?
  •          Do you tell your parents what you spend your money for?
  •          Are you economical or do you tend to waste a lot of money?

Complete the idioms . Then , in pairs , discuss whether you agree or disagree with the statements. Make up short dialogues .
