Topic: Sport in Britain

Objectives:

  • to systematize students’ knowledge on the topic;
  • to develop reading comprehension and oral speech;

Learning Outcomes. By the end of the lesson students will be able to

  • talk about British kinds of sport;
  • use  new vocabulary in their speech;
  • answer the questions about sport;

 Support materials: poster; picture cards: kinds of sport; HO1; HO2.

Procedure

I. Introduction.

1.Greeting.

T: Good morning, boys and girls! I’m glad to see you

Aim  

T.: Please, look at the posters on the blackboard and guess the theme of our lesson. What kinds of sport are popular in Britain? What will we do today?  

T.: Today we will speak about British sport. So, be active, attentive, work together and let’s enjoy our lesson!

Warming up.

Sport is fun for girls and boys,

It’s much better than toys.

You can sledge and ski and skate

And throw snowballs with Kate.

You can swim and play football,

Hockey, tennis, and basketball.

You can jump and you can run,

You can have a lot of fun.

II.MAIN PART.

Group work.

T.: Now answer please my questions.

  • What sports and games do you know?
  • Can you play football?
  • Can you play basketball?
  • Can you play volleyball?
  • Do you like to play badminton?
  • Does your friend play table tennis?
  • Does your father play tennis?
  • What sports games do you play?

T: What sports games do the British people like?

T: We have to divide into 4 groups. Each group gets one part of the text about sport in Britain. You should read it, translate and retell it in your small group. After that complete the missing words in your card. Change the group and do the same with the other parts of the text.

HO1

  1. Golf was first played in Scotland in the fifteenth century. Golf is one of the most popular outdoor sports in the world. Players try to hit a golf ball into a small hole. Most of them have 18 holes that are between a hundred and 500 meters long.
  2. Cricket  is played from May till September. This game is associated with England. There are many cricket clubs in this country. English people like to play cricket. Cricket is the English national sport in summer. If you want to play cricket you must wear white boots, a white shirt and white long trousers. There are two teams. Each team has eleven players. Cricket is popular in  schools.
  3. Football is the most popular game in Britain. It was first developed in England. It is a team game. Each team can have 12 players. A match consists of two 45 minutes halves with a 15 minute break. Team can win when you have more goals. Professional football is a big business. Football is played at schools too.
  4. Rugby. You can see a ball in this game, but it is not round. It is oval. This is a team game. There are fifteen players in each team. It is a popular game in England. Rugby is now a popular sport in many countries of the world, with clubs and national teams. Rugby is women’s sport.

  • Are you tired? Let`s do some exercises. You know this funny song very well. Now for two minutes forget about everything, just dance and sing. «If you are happy and you know it, clap your hands…».
  • Very good. Sit down, please. Let`s go back to our lesson.
