WARM-UP

  1.  (T–S, S–T) Books closed. -  Are people addicted to the Internet? How many people do you think are addicted to the Internet? Elicit ideas and have a brief class discussion.

  1.  PRE-LISTENING  (T–S, T–S, S–T) Ask Ss to turn to p. 91 and look at Exercise 1. Give them 2 minutes to read UK TODAY thinking how similar or different the situation in their country is. When they have finished, elicit ideas from different Ss and have a brief class discussion.
  2. WHILE-LISTENING  (S–S, T–S, S–T) Refer Ss to Exercise 2. Put them in pairs and give them 2 minutes to discuss the questions. When they have finished, invite Ss to share what they have discussed with the class and have a brief class discussion. Then play the recording so that Ss can listen and check their ideas. Elicit the answers and check.

TIP See Culture notes in TB p. 178 for information about viral videos. (Viral videos are videos that become incredibly popular. They are shared online through social networking sites, video sharing sites such as YouTube, texts and email. For example, the famous Gangnam Style video (2013) has been watched over 1.8 billion times! It is impossible to predict what will make a video go viral. There are now various viral video websites where you can find the latest viral videos.)

  1. (S–S, T–S, S–T) Ss do Exercise 3 individually. Ask them to read the statements so that they know what they are listening out for. When they are ready, play the recording so that Ss can listen to four people talking about viral videos and do the matching activity. Then do a quick class check.
  2. (S–S, T–S, S–T) Refer Ss to Exercise 4. Put them in pairs and give them 2 minutes to discuss and answer the questions. Then elicit answers from different pairs, but do not confirm their ideas at this stage.
  3. (T–S, S–T) Exercise 5. Play the recording again so that Ss listen and check their answers in Exercise 4. Then do a quick class check.

POST-LISTENING

  1.  (T–S, S–T) Exercise 6. Refer Ss to WORD STORE 7D p. 15. Give them 1–2 minutes to complete the activity with the words in the box. Then Ss listen and check their answers. Practise the collocations using choral drilling and individual repetition. Ask concept check questions to make sure Ss understand the meaning of all the collocations.
  2.  (S–S, T–S, S–T) Ss do Exercise 7 individually. Give them 2 minutes to complete the text and then 1 extra minute to check their answers in pairs. When they have finished, play the recording so that Ss can listen and check their answers. Then do a quick class check.
  3.  (S–S, T–S, S–T) Ss do Exercise 9 individually. Give them 2 minutes to complete the groups of nouns and then 1 extra minute to check their answers in pairs. Make sure to check spelling and to check and drill the pronunciation of the words using choral and individual repetition. Then ask Ss to underline the main stress in each word. Do a quick class check.
  4.  (S–S, T–S, S–T) Exercise 10. Give Ss 1 minute to decide which noun in each group in Exercise 9 has fewer syllables and then 1 extra minute to compare their answers with a partner. Then play the recording so that they listen and check their answers. Do a class check. Practise the words using choral drilling and individual repetition.

 PRODUCTION

(S–S, S–T, T–S) Refer Ss to Exercise 8. Tell them that in a few minutes they are going to talk about an online video they have uploaded, shared or viewed recently. Give Ss 1 minute to read the questions and prepare individually. Then put them in pairs and tell them that they must keep talking for a full 3 minutes. As Ss interact with each other, and walk around taking notes of what you hear. When they have finished, invite individual Ss to share what their partners said.
