The Theme: The Place where I live

The Subject of the Lesson: Sights of Ukraine (intra-integrated 5 form)

Objectives: Students will be able to:

  • Use the words on the topic;
  • talk about different sightseeing in Ukraine;
  • To develop the pupils’ cognitive and creative skills; 
  • To widen the pupils’ outlook.
Visual Aids: a book, a workbook A. Nesvit “English 5”, pictures the places of interest in Ukraine, presentation project, travel leaflet “Welcome to Ukraine”, computer. 
 

Procedure of the Lesson

 

I. Warming up

Good morning! I’ m glad to see you.

- Who is on duty today?

- What is your name? -Where are you from?

- What’s your address? - How are you? - Why?

 

Today we have an unusual lesson. Pupils, today at the lesson we’ll have to do a lot of activities. We are going to prepare for our travelling about …. But what country we’ll travel you must tell me. You must open the word at the blackboard. I’ll help you. (slide 3)

 

U K R A I N E

 

U – we use it when it rains (umbrella)

K – the capital of our country (Kyiv)

R – the colour of double-decker busses in London (red)

A – it is the 1 st letter of the English alphabet (a)

I – part of the land (island)

N – it is a negative word (no)

E – it is the biggest animal (elephant)

 

So, what country is it?

- It’s Ukraine.

T: Yes, it’s Ukraine.

 

Today we are going to visit some interesting places in Ukraine

- Which sights of Ukraine do you know? 

But our tour is unusual. You, tourists, will take an active part in the tour. You can see these places; listen to the information about them. And can do some tasks. Sometimes you can also be guides!

 

II. Checking of H/A

- Last lesson we learned new words. Let's remember these words.

But first of all I want you to look at the screen and try to guess the meanings of the words, written on it.

I have got some tables with letters. I give them to our group and your task is to find as many words as you can. You should remember that the words are across and down. So, out of letters you should make up words. For this task you’ve got 2 minutes. Well, your time is over. So, first group read your words. And who has got some other words?

3.3. Role-play in pairs.

 Ivan and Taras I have a special task for you. Taras, imagine that you are a foreigner. You are on holiday in Ukraine and you want to visit some places of interest in our region. So, your task is to ask questions. Ivan, imagine that you are a travel agent and your task is to answer Taras' questions and to give him some useful information. For this task you’ve got some minutes.

    Ira and Lida I have a special task for you too. Here I've got some pictures of your native village, so you should make a short presentation of it.

    Dima, here are some pictures of the Crimea, well, your task is to make an advertisement of this place. You’ve got some minutes for this task too.

4.1. «A Trip around Ukraine»

When you travel to Ukraine, there are some great places to visit during your stay.  Here are the top ten places you are going to want to see before you leave the country.  Each of them has their own unique qualities and all of them combined make up the beauty of Ukraine.

Read and describe the place to your friends.

 

Crimean Resorts

Crimea is a beautiful region to visit and vacation.  Many of the cities in this region were built and settled by Greek, Venetians, and Genoese who inter-married with local residents as they built their life there.

Carpathian Mountains

Considered the ‘Green Pearl’ of the region, the Carpathian Mountains is filled with resorts and tourist centres.  It is filled with wildlife, small villages, and meadows.  It is also the mysterious inspiration for a variety of vampire novels over the years.

Kiev

Located on the Dnieper River, Kiev is the capital of Ukraine and the home to 3 million people.  The centre of trade routes during the 11th and 12th centuries between the Baltic and Mediterranean, Kiev is a beautiful, historic city.

Lviv

Lviv is city that is made up of medieval streets paved with stones, architecture of different centuries, and once the capital of the Slavic state of Galicia-Volyn.  It was also once part of the Austro-Hungarian and Polish empires.

Odessa

The third largest city in Ukraine, Odessa is known as the ‘Pearl of the Black Sea’ by the countries residents.  The city has a mild climate, warm waters, and sunlit beaches that attract thousands of tourists each year.

Yalta

This is the city that Anton Chekhov chose to live in while writing his many novels.  This seaside resort on the Crimean peninsula is filled with resorts, beaches, and museums.

Kamyanets-Podilsky

Considered to be one of the oldest cities in Ukriane, Kanyanet-Podilsky can trace its history back over 1,000 years.  It’s on Smotrich River on a rocky island in a picturesque canyon.

Chernihiv

This city has been known as a human settlement for over 2,000 years and was the second most important city in Ukraine during the Kyivan Rus period of the country.

Sophievka Park, Uman

This beautifully landscaped park has architecture masterpieces that date back to the end of the XVIII and beginning of the XIX centuries.  The park is spread over 154.7 hectares of land outside the ancient town of Cherkassy.

Poltava

Poltava is located between Kharkiv and Kiev.  It is the city in which the Swedes and Cossacks battled in 1709 against Czar Peter I, securing the Russian position over Ukraine.

PLACES TO SEE IN UKRAINE

There are many places worth sightseeing on the territory of Ukraine because of its ancient history. A wide range of interesting things awaits the tourists, in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, where there exist magnificent historic sights, St. Sophia's Cathedral (1017—1031), the Kyiv Cave Monastery (1051) and numerous museums. A cruise on the Dnipro River offers visitors an attractive introduction to Ukraine's history and culture. It's interesting to visit Zaporizhzhia where Cossack movement began in the 15th century. Nearby is the famous 700-year-old oak tree — 36 metres high. Odessa, a regional centre, has a Philharmonic and the famous Opera and Ballet Theatre. The old town of Kaniv is situated on the high right bank of the Dnipro River. This town is world-known for its Tarasova Hora. Taras Shevchenko, the great Ukrainian poet, artist and philosopher, is buried here. Chernihiv is one of the oldest towns in our country. There are five out of twenty-five architectural landmarks of the 11th—12th centuries in Chernihiv. It was one of the most important centres of Kyivan Rus'. Another place in Ukraine, which attracts a lot of visitors, is Uman'. It is famous for its park "Sophiyivka". This park was set up in 1796—1801 by Count Pototsky for his wife, Sophia, and was called after her name. The park is one of the most beautiful monuments of garden architecture in Ukraine. Lviv, a beautiful city in the west of Ukraine, was founded by Prince Danylo Halytsky. Historically, the city was first mentioned in 1256. Today Lviv has an area of 155 square km. Its core is the city of the 14th—18th centuries. It is built up with tall stone buildings, many of them in their original style. The oldest monument in Lviv is the foundation and walls of St. Nicholas' Church, built by Prince Danylo in the 13th century. The remnants of Vysoky Zamok also date back to the 13th century. Lviv is the only city in Ukraine that still has some original Renaissance architecture. In the south the Crimea lies, with its warm weather, seaside health resort and rest homes. Travelling across Ukraine one can have an excellent opportunity to learn its history and culture, to see its ancient monuments and picturesque views Ukraine has always been famous for

VI. Evaluation

Now, imagine that I’ve got a real microphone. Well, your task is with the help of it to answer my questions. You have already known the rules of this activity. So, in chain fashion, answer my question: «What have you learnt at our English lesson today?»

 Unfortunately, time flies quickly, that why I want to ask you to do the following:
