TEXT
Great Britain is the largest island in Europe. It consists of England, Scotland, and Wales. England is situated in the central and southern part of Great Britain. It is washed by the Irish Sea in the west, the
English Channel in the south, the North Sea in the east. England is bounded by Scotland in the north and Wales in the west. The area is 130,000 sq kilometers. People who live in England are called Englishmen.
The population of England is 47,536,000 inhabitants.
London, the capital of England, stands on the river Thames. The longest river in England is the Severn. The major cities are Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester. The Poetic name of England is
“Foggy Albion”. Many years ago the Romans associated the term “Albion” with “albus” (white) and identified it with the Dover Chalk cliffs. The term ‘foggy’ appeared because of the specific climate. England is famous for its fogs which last for days and weeks in autumn and winter.
The flag of England is called St George’s Cross. It is a red cross in a white field. The national
Emblem is Red Rose. John Bull is a figure representing the English people, particularly in newspapers
Cartoons. He is always drawn as a broadly built, red-faced farmer, sometimes with his bulldog. The name comes from the lampoon “The History of John Bull” by John Arbuthnot (1712).
