Subtopic: Travelling to interesting places.

Objectives:

  • to read proverbs about travelling;
  • to discuss different places of interests and means of transport;
  • to practice listening skills;
  • to sing a song “Over the mountains”;
  • to watch videos about places of interests and do the while-watching tasks;
  • to read and discuss the text “Nazca lines”, do post reading activities;
  • to write and role-play the dialogue about interesting places that you want to visit;
  • to do a crossword “Means of transport”.

 

 

Material: SB “Family and Friends 6”, WB “Family and Friennds”, “Enterprise” Video-CD (“People and places”), a map with places of interests, photos of sightseeing, HO1, HO2.

                                              Procedure

Beginning of the lesson.

Greeting:

T. Good afternoon, children! I am glad to see you!

Ps: We are glad to see you too!

T: This lesson is unusual for you and me. You can see many guests. They are teachers. I hope that our co-operation will be successful. I want to ask you to be attentive and active. Don’t be afraid, don’t be silent. Speak and express your opinion. OK, look at each other, please. Smile! Look at me. Smile! So, let’s start our communication.

Aim.

T: The topic of our lesson today is “Travelling to interesting places”. Open your copybooks and write the day and date and the topic of the lesson.We have a map of our journey. It will help us to organise our tour and shows us the places that we are going to visit. During our journey you’ll do different tasks. We’ll discuss places of interests and different kinds of travelling, you’ll listen to the conversation at the

railway station, you’ll watch videos about holidays and role-play dialogues about mysterious places.                                            

     To begin the lesson, I would like to ask you to read the motto of the lesson.                                                     

Look at the board. There is a sentence there. But all the words in it are written together. Try to divide these words and read the sentence.

T: There are many English proverbs about travelling. Let’s read some of them.

  • East or west – home is best.
  • There is no place like home.
  • A journey of thousand miles begins with a single step.
  • He who travels far knows much.
  • Every departure has an arrival.
  • Poor man’s luggage is always light.
  • Travel broadens the mind.
  • The heaviest luggage for a traveller is an empty purse.
  • The wise traveller lives his heart at home.

 

Brainstorming: Conversation: T-P1-P2-P3…

T: Modern life is impossible without travelling. Say me, please why do people travel? What makes them travel? Tell your suggestions.

P1: People travel because they want to visit new countries.

P2: They often travel on business.

P3: We travel to get new impressions.

P4: People travel to meet new friends.

P5: Some people travel to study at university.

P6: People travel to earn much money.

P7: We travel to visit our relatives.

 Vocabulary practice:

T: So, let’s start our journey! First of all, people choose places they want to visit. Look at the board. There are pictures of famous places. Match the places with the countries they are come from.

T: But our journey is impossible without kinds of transport. What kinds of transport do you know? Complete this spider gram. How can people travel?

T: Tell me about your favourite kind of transport and explain your choice.

 

Speaking:

P1: I like travelling by plane, because it is the fastest way of travelling. You can get to many cities only in a few hours. During the trip you can sit comfortably in an armchair and read, eat or sleep.

P2: Hiking is interesting and good for health. You can stop where you wish. You can enjoy beautiful nature. You don’t need to think about tickets.

P3: I like travelling by train. It is rather fast and not so expensive. When you are going by plane you can sit in a carriage, eat and sleep. You can enjoy beautiful nature through the window.

P4: For me the best way of travelling is by car. You don’t need to buy tickets. You can stop where you wish. You can admire landscapes and watch the road, stop and have a picnic.

P5: I like travelling by ship.  It is called voyage. It’s very comfortable and relaxing. You don’t need to hurry. You can enjoy the beautiful view of the sea or ocean. You can sunbathe on a ship too.

 

T:  For the next task I want to divide you into two groups. Take pieces of paper from the box. Those pupils who took red pieces of paper form the group №1, those who took blue pieces of paper form the group № 2. Now listen to the task.  People need to pack their suitcases before travelling. The pupils from group № 1 will go to the Great Britain.

Passport,  sunglasses, money, sun cream, umbrella, swimsuit, glasses, credit card, tickets, sandals, jacket, shorts, hat, evening dress, suit, camera, trainers, cap, mobile phone, toothbrush, hairbrush.

 

T: So, we’ll travel by train during our journey, because it’s comfortable and not so expensive.                                                 

 

Listening: T:  So, we need to go to the railway station to get into the train. Imagine that we are at the railway station. Listen to the 5 different conversations at the railway station and do the while-listening tasks. The group 1 do the task 2 and the group № 2 do the task 3.

Singing a song: We need a rest. We are in a train. So, let’s sing a song “Over the mountains” (British council site).

 

Watching a video: T: We have arrived to our first holiday destination Great Britain. Group № 1 Watch a video about Great Britain and do the task 4 on your sheets of paper. Group 2 has arrived to Caribbean Island. Watch the video about Caribbean Island and do the while listening task on your sheets of paper.

Reading: T: We need to visit one more place. It’s the Nazca Valley in Peru, in South America. It’s a very mysterious place. Why? Let’s read a text about it.

Open your books at p.80 and find the text “The Nazca Lines”. Read it and answer the questions:

  1. Who were the Nazca? (P1: The Nazca were an ancient people that lived in Peru in south America, about 2000 years ago).
  2. What are the Nazca lines? (P2: They are giant sketches which the Nazca people drew in the desert in the Nazca Valley).
  3. What did the Nazca draw pictures of? (P3: Nazca drew pictures of animals, birds and figures).
  4. Do scientists know exactly why Nazca people made drawings? (P4: The scientists don’t know exactly why Nazca people made drawings).
  5. When were the Nazca lines discovered? (P5: The drawings were first discovered in 1927, when the plane was flying across this part of the desert.)

T: Read again and match the questions from ex. 3 at p.80 with the answers in the interview.

Speaking: T: The text “Nazca lines” was very interesting. Let’s discuss it. Write dialogues using prompts from Ex.4 at p.81 in your SB or your own answers.
