Урок у 3 класі “Taking care of our nature”

 

The aim of the lesson: to develop students’ critical and creative thinking by learning about protecting our world.

The objectives:

To encourage students to:

-revise and introduce topical vocabulary;

-practise  Present Simple in the form of group discussion; -develop creative writing skills in the form of top tips.

-reflect on the information discussed at the lesson based on students’ background knowledge.

Outcomes :

By the end of the lesson students will be able  to:

-predict the topic of the lesson  based on the video input;

-recollect, recognize and identify the learnt units on the topic  “Nature and the environment”;

- outline the main environmental issues through auditory comprehension;

-select an appropriate statement among challenging sentences in reading comprehension;

-role-play the situation on the given topic;

-write top tips “ How you can help our planet”;

-summarize the main ideas on the topic, presenting a project “ The Earth book” and sing a song ;

Language  Support  Resources: video presentations, distributive material, visual aids,  sheets with after -reading tasks, Fly High3 PBs, student’s project.

                                              The procedure

1.Organizing moment.

Good morning , children I am  glad to see you. I hope you’ll be active, supportive and  energetic at our today’s lesson as we are going to speak about …………… stop- you’ll guess the topic of our lesson. But before- watch this video .( “Human impact on the environment”)

2.Lead in.

Yes , we really live in a beautiful world. So, what are we going to speak about?

P1 We’ll speak about our planet and nature.

P2 About rivers and lakes.

P3 Hills and mountains.

P4 Animals and birds.

P5 Seas and oceans.

P6 Forests and trees.

P7 Air and water.

P8 I think we’ll speak about litter and pollution.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. We live on the Earth. It is very big, beautiful and full of wonders. But not all places on the Earth are clean and green. Many of them are dirty, ugly and polluted.

 So, what is the topic of our lesson?(Our beautiful Planet). Not exactly.

The topic of the lesson is “Taking care of our Planet Earth”.

Information on the objectives of the lesson. So, at our lesson we’ll speak about:

-our planet Earth and the ways to look after it;

-sing songs and recite poems;

-visit the Planet Earth museum;

-read the text and do interesting tasks on it;

-role-play the situation;

-write Top tips “How you can help the world”; - present “The Earth book” project.

3. Warming- up.

 Does this topic seem familiar to you? I mean what lessons help you to know it better?

P1 We  learn about  our planet Earth at  ACE and Nature Study lessons.

What do you remember?

P2 I remember that trees clean the air and produce oxygen for us to breathe.

P3 I remember  that we must conserve energy .

P4 I remember about the importance of saving water.

That’s great. Children, before we start our magnificent journey around the Planet, look at the board , find and circle the words that are connected with the topic:

4.Phonetic drill.

Nice job. During our lessons we learnt different poems about nature and the Earth. Do you remember any of them?

With my family on a hike. Sometimes I go on my bike

In the forest, I really like.

Wonderful! Let’s put this plant into a rich soil to make our Planet green and beautiful.

5.Listening activity:

Pre-listening activity

 1)Children, do you like gardening?

P1 Yes, I do. I help my grandma to water the flowers.

P2 I help my grandpa to plant trees.

2)Do you like to go to the forest?

P2 Yes, I do. I usually go to the forest with my family at the weekend in summer.

3)Do you  like to ride a bike? Why?

P3  I like to ride a bike. I think it’s very exciting.

4)Is riding a bike better than driving a car?

P4 To my mind, riding a bike is better, because it keeps the air clean. 5)Do you save water? I mean do you turn off the water when you clean your teeth?

P5 Yes , I do. I usually turn off the water when I clean my teeth.

6) What else can you do to save water?

P6 As for me I take a shower not a bath.

7)What bags do you use when you go shopping?

P7 I use paper bags, I don’t use plastic bags when I go shopping.

8)Where do you like to have a rest?

P7 I like to go on a picnic to the forest.

P8 I usually go to the cinema.

P9 I like to go the museum.

Great. Let’s turn our classroom   into Planet Earth museum. You’ll watch the video

 “Planet Earth museum”. Be attentive and pay attention to the mentioned problems. But before our guide starts the excursion we’ll clear out some unknown words:

1.marine animals- animals that live in the seas and oceans

1)What  is Planet Earth museum?

P1 It’s a museum where you can learn some interesting facts about the world we live in.

2)What are the forests?

P2 They are a home for many animals and plants.

3)Do the trees clean the air?

P3 Yes, they do. The trees purify the air and are a shelter for some animals.

4)Are the oceans a home to millions  of marine animals?

P4 Yes, they are.

5)What do people throw into into rivers, lakes and oceans ?

P5 People  throw rubbish into rivers, lakes and oceans.

6)Why do turtles die?

P6 Turtles die because they mistake plastic bags for jellyfish when they eat them.

7)Do you want to live in a green world?(Yes, we do.) 8)Is our Earth special? Why?

P8 I think, our Earth is special, because There is just one.

It gives us water, soil and sun. People and animals share the land, Let’s all lend a helping hand!

We can save water and plant a tree.

Make a better place for you and for me.

6.Reading

Pre-reading activity

Very good!  . By the way, when do people celebrate the Earth day (April 22). Children, remember- Planet doesn’t need us, we need the Planet. So, to make it a better place  for us to live, we must look after it. Now you’re going to read the text. You are sitting in groups.  Each group receives a different task . The first group is going to tick the good actions and cross the bad actions. And the second group will cross F sentences and tick T sentences.

 Open your books page 103, read the text “ Looking after our world” carefully and be ready to present your answers.

Anna Nature: Stop! You mustn’t throw litter, children! We live in a beautiful world.

P1:Who are you?

AN: I’m Anna Nature. Hold my hands.

P2:Will we go up in the sky?

AN: Yes, we will! Where do you want to go?

P1: All around the world!

P2: Look! Mountains and forests.

P1: Oh, they’re incredible. But why are the trees crying?

AN: People are cutting down the trees for paper and furniture.

P2:I see. Wow! An ocean and a whale!

P1: Fantastic! But where is the fish?

AN: It is dying, because people throw chemicals into rivers, lakes and oceans.

P2: Anna nature,  where are we flying now ? I  can see noting. It’s smoggy.

AN: We’re flying over a big city with lots of cars and buses. That’s why the air is dirty.

P1: You were right, Anna Nature. We must look after our beautiful world.

9.  Creative writing

During our lessons step by step we all together created “The Earth book”. And today  at our last lesson on the topic we have the final page to complete. Let’s give our helping hand to the Planet. Now, children,  write Top tips “How you can help the world on these handprints  and stick them into our “Earth book “. Top tips “How you can help the world”

1)Turn off the water when you clean your teeth;

2)Plant more trees, they give us oxygen and shade;

3) Save water: take a shower, not a bath;

4)Don’t throw litter in the street or in the sea;

5 )Give  old  clothes  to  charity;

6)Conserve energy: switch off the light when you leave the room;

7)  Don’t  waste paper;

8)  Take a bus ,walk or ride a bike.

9)  Don’t cut down trees.

10)Take care of animals.

10.Project presentation(  “The Earth book”) And now let’s present our Earth book project.

The   Earth book

1.     I take care of the Earth because I know I can do little things every day to make a big difference.

2.     I use both sides of the paper and bring my own bags to the market.

3.     I love the trees and I want the owls to have a place to live.

4.     I turn off the water when I brush my teeth and I take a shower, not a bath.

5.     I love the fish and I want the oceans to stay blue.

6.     I ride a bike or walk to school because I want to keep the air clean.

7.     I remember to turn off  the light when I leave the room to save energy.

8.     I throw litter in the trash  can to keep my town clean.

9.     Most of  all I help take care of the Earth because I want  us all to be happy and healthy.

10.Every one of  us can help to protect the Earth and make it feel good .

11.Remember: if we take care of it, it will take care of us.

During our lessons we learn a song about our Planet . Now, let’s sing it.

(pupils stick pictures to the song on the board and comment on them)

P1 Planet is  crying because it's not clean, Earth is dying because it's not green...

P2 Earth is our dear Mother, don't pollute it, She gives us food and shelter, just salute it...

P3 With dying trees and animals, it's in sorrow, Make green today and green tomorrow...

P4 With melting snow, one day it will sink,

How can we save it, just think...

 P5 Grow more trees, make Mother Earth green, Reduce pollution and make her a Queen...

11.Reflexion

Today we had an amazing  journey around the Earth.

What was the most interesting for you?

P1 As for me I liked our journey to the Planet Earth museum.

P2 I liked my classmates’ dramatizing.

P3 I enjoyed singing songs and reciting poems .

P4 I liked the “Earth book” project most of all.

P5 I liked the relaxation with a “Deep deep deep” song.

P6 I liked to stick handprints into the Earth book.

What was the most difficult for you?

P1 To choose T and F sentences.

P2 The most difficult for me was to write top tips “How you can help the world”, but it was interesting.

You worked so hard during the lesson.  Well done, children! Today we  discussed that our Planet, called the Earth helps us more than we may know: it gives us the air we breathe, the water we drink, and it feeds us with a food that it grows. We need to take care of it well, because it’s the only Planet we have. At our lesson we also sang songs and recited poems, visited the Planet Earth museum, read the text and did interesting tasks on it, role-played the situation; wrote Top tips  on handprints “ How you can help the world”, presented “The Earth book” project.
