               Lesson 9.  Theme. Sports day.

               Objectives: вдосконалювати навички вживання лексичних одиниць; розвивати вміння читати, переказувати; удосконалювати навички усного мовлення й логічного мислення.

                     Materials: HO.

                                                  Procedure

  1. Warm-up.
  1. Ranking. Take the sports you know something about and grade them according to how exciting or boring you think they are.

  1. Test your memory. Look carefully at the words in the picture for 2 minutes, try to memorize them. Then, cover the words. If you can write down less 15 words from your memory, that means your memory needs training.

  1. Vocabulary practice.

1.Game “Guess the game”. Match the definition with the game.

  1. The most popular English summer game, played on a green field, very slow and long by two teams of 11 players each.
  2. One of the most popular English games, played from late August until the beginning of May on a large field with a round leather ball, by two teams of 11 players each.
  3. A very popular outdoor game, played on a court with rackets in which the ball must pass back and forth over the net.

     

  1. A game played by two or teams of two players on a rectangular table using wood paddles and a small plastic ball.

 

  1. A game for two or four players played in a four-walled court with a special rackets and soft ball. This ball is made to rebound off the front wall against any of the others. It is in play so long as it hits front wall above the line drawn on it and does not hit the floor.

   2.Brainstorming.

1. How many names of sports can you think of in England?

     Write down as many as you can in 3 minutes.

2) Sports are often grouped into categories. Here are some of                             the most common. Look at the list of sports you made, and sort them into the categories.

           

 

 

 

Water sports, indoor sports, winter sports, target sports, motor sports, ball sports, racket sports.

 

3. Exchanging information. Active participation in sports is very popular in Britain, and is encouraged from the earliest years of school. There are hundreds of sports clubs all over the country. Here is s list of the 20 most popular sports played by 11-to 19-years olds in Britain.

 

With a partner, choose what you think are the ten most popular.

4.Using “Sports” words, fill in the blanks in the sentences below with a word or phrase from the table.

  1. Listening comprehension. Listen to the commentators and say which sport is taking place.
  1. Oh, and here he comes, after all those hard kilometers of running.

And as he comes onto a stadium, everyone is standing up and cheering. He’s waving to the crowd, and-oh no! What a disaster.

He’s on the floor, and he’s not greeting up! I can’t believe it.

 

  1. And this is really a great game now as the Canadian team fight back. The score is now three all, and the standard of play, the speed is really high. But here come the Americans now, and it’s Clarke to Jonson, to Clarke again, and-another goal for this fabulous American team.
  2. And there is complete silence all round the and  Serhiy Bubka,

 the Ukrainian, takes his run. He starts slowly, then pace quickens,

and up he goes, over the bar, and will he do it?

 

 

Yes! And that’s another world record for this wonderful twenty-five-years-athlete from Ukraine.

  1. And here they are, locked together, these two powerful men, one of Greece, and the other from Spain. The Greek champion is winning on points at the moment. But his opponent is still fighting hard, and-he throws the Greek champion to the ground. Oh, what a noise that made! So it’s victory for the man from Spain.

 

  1. Grammar practice. Complete the sentences with the words. Read and translate.
