SPORTS AND GAMES
OBJECTIVES:
- to revise students’ knowledge on forming Present Perfect Continuous;
- to develop students’ speaking, writing, listening and reading skills;
- to develop students’ creative thinking;
- to enrich knowledge about the sport competitions in English – speaking countries;
- to teach cooperation in pair and group work.
EQUIPMENT: computer, slides, pictures, handouts, recording.
PROCEDURE
Teacher: Hello, everybody. How are you today? (Pupils’ answers.)
OK, all of us are fine so I hope our lesson will be fine too.
Teacher: Now we are going to solve a crossword. I will read the definition of a certain word which is connected with sport. Your task is to guess the word. If you guess the word from the first time – you will get 2 special points. If you guess it from the second time, then you will get 1 point.
Teacher reads the definitions of a particular word (13 words). The task is to find out the word using its definition. If the answer is right, the pupil gets 1point (after the 1st definition) or 2 (after the 2nd definition) points.

After completing the table:
Teacher: Can you find the key word?
Pupils: Yes, we can. It’s “SPORTSMANSHIP”.
Do you know the meaning of that word?
Pupils: GIVE THE DEFINITION
Teacher: You are perfectly right. So, we are going to speak about sports and games. It is the topic of our lesson.
1. Pre – listening activity.
Teacher: Before doing the second task let’s remember the rules for the person to be strong and healthy.
(1 right sentence is awarded with special point).
Suggested answers:
- going in for sport
- attending sport sections
- doing physical exercises
- playing games
2. Listening.
Listen to the radio programme and complete the sentences with the correct prepositions.
___ today’s stress – filled world, people often talk _______ “finding time” ___ fitness activities. Here’s what you could do to train your body even if you can’t find time ____ regular training:
- Use the stairs, not the lift! Go ___ and ____ the stairs!

3. After – listening activity.
Pupils do this activity in groups. After doing the exercise pupils exchange their cards and check the answers of their opponents. The teacher says and shows the answers and then the pupils give the marks. 1 correct answer costs 1 points.
Teacher: Let’s find out who scored 24 points?
Teacher says that the work has done well (or perfectly). Teacher asks the pupils if the doing exercises is useful. Both teacher and pupils come to the conclusion that this exercise is worth of their attention .
Now let’s have a little rest and sing a sport song.
Reading in silence.
Teacher: Now let’s train our grammar skills. Your task is to make up the questions using the answers. Time for doing the task is about 6 minutes.
Write the questions as in the example. Use the Present Perfect Continuous Tense. Start your questions with the words given in brackets.
