Урок – вікторина: «Do you know Great Britain?»

Цель: формирование коммуникативной компетенции учащихся на основе изученных лексических единиц, речевых и грамматических структур по страноведческой тематике; обобщение изученного материала по теме «Великобритания»; актуализация страноведческого материала; развитие навыков разговорной речи с использованием пройденного материала; развитие навыков понимания устной речи; воспитание толерантного отношения к людям других национальностей; воспитывать у учащихся интерес к изучению английского языка.

Ход игры-викторины

- Hello, boys and girls! We are glad to greet you at our game! All children like to play. That’s why we shall play the game today.  

- Now listen to the rules of our game. The game consists of  4 stages, each of them includes different tasks. You’ll get points for right answers.

Round.I. The first task is... You should answer the questions as quickly as you can. For each right answer you’ll get one point.

1. What the official name of the country which we call Great Britain? (The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.)
2. What are the main colours of the Union flag? (Blue, red and white.)
3. Who lived in Sherwood Forest? (Robin Hood.)
4. What is the famous airport in London? (Heathrow.)
5. Where were "The Beatles" born? (In Liverpool.)
6. What is favourite hot drink in Britain? (Tea.)
7. What is difference between English and Russian tea? (English – with milk, Russian – with lemon.)
8. Name the architectural masterpiece of Christopher Wren. (St. Paul’s Cathedral.)
9. Who was called "An Iron Lady"? (Margaret Thatcher.)
10. What is the seventh biggest city of the world? (It is London.)
11. This monarch ruled for the longest period in the English history, for 64 years. (It is Queen Victoria.)
12. When did the Great Fire of London take place? (It took place in 1666.)
13. It is the historical centre of London and one of the biggest financial centres of the world. (It is the City.)
14.  What component of the United Kingdom is the smallest? (It is Northern Ireland.)

Round.II.

1. What is the largest part of the UK? (1 point.) (The largest part of the UK is England.)
2. What is the capital of Wales? (1 point.) (The capital of Wales is Cardiff.)
3. What parts does the United Kingdom consist of? (1 point.) (The United Kingdom consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales.)
4. How often do the British people elect the members of the House of Commons? (2 points.) (The British people elect the members of the House of Commons every five year.)
5. Who is the Head of State in Great Britain? (1 point.)(The Head of State is the Queen.)
6. What is the favorite topic to discuss in Great Britain? (1 point.) (The favourite topic to discuss in Britain is weather.)
7. What pets are the special animals in Great Britain? (2 points.) (The special animals in Great Britain are cats.)
8. Where can you see ravens in London? (2 points.)(The ravens we can see in the Tower of London.)
9. What English cities are famous for their universities? (2 points.) (Oxford and Cambridge are famous for their universities.)
10. What is the highest mountain in Scotland? (The highest mountain in Scotland is Ben Nevis.)
11. What is the capital of Wales? (1 point.) (The capital of Wales is Cardiff.)
12. The second highest mountain in Britain is situated in Wales. What is its names? (4 points.) (Its name is the Mount Snowdon.)
13. What is the capital of Northern Ireland? (1 point.)

14. What is the nationality of people who were born in Northern Ireland? (2 points.)

Round.III. All of us know that the capital of the United Kingdom is London. And now I want you to listen to my stories. I shall describe different places of interest of London. And your task is to guess these sights. Each right answer is 1 point.

1.   There are many old and new beautiful parks in London. This park is the largest one. It is one of the most popular places of Londoners during the hot summer days. The park is famous for its Speaker’s Corner. (Hyde Park.)
2.   It is a wonderful building. The Queen Victoria Memorial is situated in front of it. It takes you ten minutes to get from this building to Trafalgar Square, which is the centre of London. The Queen of Great Britain lives here. (Buckingham Palace.)
3.   It is one of the greatest English churches. It is not far from the Tower of London. The famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It is a fine building with many columns and towers. In one of the towers there is one of the largest bells in the world. (St. Paul’s Cathedral.)
4.   It is more than nine hundred years old. There are many monuments and statues there, many English kings and queens are buried there. It is famous for the Poet’s Corner. It is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in London. This church has two tall towers. (Westminster Abbey.)
5.   It was a fortress, a palace, a prison and the King’s Zoo. Now it is a museum. You can see a lot of interesting things in the halls of this building. William the Conqueror built it in the eleventh century. Twelve black ravens live in it. People believe that London will be rich while the ravens live there. (The Tower.)
6. It is a long grey building with towers. The large clock in one of the towers is known as "Big Ben". You can hear the sound of "Big Ben" every hour in London. The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. The members of the British Parliament work in this building. (The Houses of Parliament.)

Round.IV. The next task is... I’ll give you up crosswords and you should find fifteen words on the theme "Great Britain".
