Volunteering

Form: 8

Aims:

  • To practice speaking skills: fluency, consolidating recently taught language
  • To develop character-related lexis
  • To practice reading skills: scanning
  • To practice listening skills: gist
  • To activate interest and elicit personal experience

Outcomes:

Students will be able:

  • to talk about volunteer jobs, the benefits to themselves and the community and give examples
  • to read, think and evaluate information they have read critically
  • consider how their interests and skills would best match up with available volunteer opportunities in their communities

Volunteering (teacher’s notes)

  1. Warm up

(Activity 1) 1 min

Aims: to break the ice and foster a safe environment for learning

Procedure: ask students to write down different words they associate with the word “Help”

(Activity 2) 1 min

Aims: to revise the vocabulary of the lesson.

Procedure: ask students to think about the traits of character that are important when thinking about volunteers. Ask students to brainstorm as many ideas as they can and to write them down.

(Activity 3) 3 mins

Aims: to provide students with speaking practice and apply lesson vocabulary in practice

Procedure: ask students to answer the questions based on the previously read text. (“Be a volunteer. Help Yourself by Helping Others”. kidshealth.org)

 

  • Answer the questions:

 

  1. What can you do to help people or animals who need it?
  2. What does volunteering mean?
  3. Does volunteering help only others?
  4. Why are volunteer experiences important?
  5. Why do teens start volunteering by working together with their parents?
  6. What things can you do as a family?
  7. Why do schools ask kids to spend some time in service to others?
  8. What can volunteering help kids learn?

Aims: to provide students with speaking and writing practice and apply lesson vocabulary, in practice

Procedure: ask students to match the volunteer activity 1-6 with the photos A-F. Photos show the voluntary projects of school 173.

(Activity 5) 8 mins

Aims: to provide students with reading practice and a real opportunity for genuine communication. Apply lesson vocabulary and summarizing skills in practice

Procedure: divide the students into two groups and ask them to read different texts. Prepare comprehension questions for each text. The students read their text, answer the questions and check understanding. Students then pair up with someone from the other group and tell them about their story, and listen to the other one.

Go Camp

 

Go Camp is the biggest volunteer programme in Eastern Europe, where volunteers from the whole globe motivate kids to learn foreign languages and introduce the world to children from all over Ukraine.

The main goal is to educate a new young generation of active and conscious citizens of Ukraine.

The tasks:

  • Develop life skills, leadership qualities and values which will prepare the youth for the challenges of the 21st century
  • Overcome the language barrier
  • Teach children to think out of the box
  • Establish exchange of cultural values
  • Break stereotypes about Ukraine among foreigners
  • Make the volunteer movement popular in Ukraine

AIESEC

 

AIESEC is a global platform for young people to explore and develop their leadership potential. AIESEC is the world’s largest non-political, independent and not –for – profit organization. It is run by students.  It was officially founded in 1948. AIESEC is represented in over 126 countries. It has over 70,000 members who are interested in world problems, leadership and management. AIESEC offers three international programs: Global Talent, Global Entrepreneur and Global Volunteer.

  • Global Talent gives students the opportunity to live and work in a foreign country in areas of management, marketing and sales.
  • Global Entrepreneur Program gives students an opportunity to develop leadership skills, work in a startup.
  • Global Volunteer gives you a chance to try to be a teacher or a  project manager, see the world, learn different cultures

Procedure: play the video: “Angelina Jolie on one’s responsibilities to others”. After watching the video, ask the students to briefly answer the questions.

Procedure: ask students to tell about other celebrities who do voluntary work.

(Activity 9) 5 mins

Aims: to give the students further speaking/writing practice using the vocabulary of the lesson.

Procedure: tell the students they are going to find out about their classmates by doing a mini survey about volunteering. When they have gathered the information, get some feedback from the whole group.

  1. Tandem bike rider- be the front rider on a tandem bike so blind people can enjoy cycling.
  2. Pet carer-look after pets when elderly owners go into hospital.
  3. Festival volunteer- work on a charity stall at a music festival and get a free ticket.
  4. Beach watcher- organize cleaning the beaches and do beach surveys.
  5. Kids theatre volunteer- work with children to do theatre plays and musical productions.
  6. Green gym environmental volunteer- get fit doing activities like planting trees or improving footpath.
  7. Toad warden- help toads cross the road when they migrate for annual breeding season.
  8. Radio producer- to make programmes for community radio station.
