Toys

Aim: to introduce and practice the new words to the topic, to revise numerals 1-10, to learn students to ask and answer the question “How many toys?”,  to develop students’ listening, writing and speaking skills

Vocabulary: present, doll, yo-yo, teddy bear, ball

Structures: How many yo-yos?

                   Two yo-yos.

I’ve got, you’ve got.

Materials: Student’s book Smart Junior 2, Smart Junior 2 work book, toys, flash cards, cards with numerals, worksheets for the listening task, poster for speaking, CD, a rhyme song for children “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear turn around” (www.youtube.com/watch); a rhythmical song “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes…” (www.supersimplearning)

Outcomes: by the end of the lesson the pupils will be able to name the toys and ask and answer the question “How many toys?”

Procedure of the lesson

I. Preliminaries.

1. Warm -up

Teacher: Hello, children! Sit down, please. Today I’ve come with my friend teddy-bear.

Let's get acquainted.

Teddy-bear: My name is Winnie-the-Pooh. What’s your name? I’ m five and you? I’m from England. Where are you from? How are you?

(Carrying the toy the teacher comes to the students and encourages them to answer the Winnie’s questions)

2. The song “Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear turn around”

II. The main part of the lesson

I. Presentation

1. Presentation of the structure “How many…?”

Winnie-the-Pooh: I’ve got many friends.  My best friends are: Piglet, the donkey Eeyore, Tigger.

The teacher shows the animal toys and asks the children: How many friends?

Then she encourages them to answer.

Winnie- the-Pooh: I’ve got one head, four paws and a tail. Have you got a tail? (Winnie shows its tail). The children react.

Winnie- the-Pooh shows its eyes, ears, paws and asks the children: How many eyes? How many ears? How many paws?

The teacher shows the students school things and asks them: How many books? (pens, bags, etc.) She encourages them to answer the questions.

2. Presentation of new words: present, doll, yo-yo, teddy bear, ball

Have students look at the presentation (Listen to CD1016Unit02Lesson2a)

and ask them to name the objects on the flashcards.

Have the children open their books to page 17 and point out the words in the vocabulary section.

 Play the CD a few times and have Ss point to each word and repeat.

II. Doing physical exercises.

Rhythmical song “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes…”

III. Listening and singing

Have students open their books to page 16 and encourage them to sing the song “Presents”

IV. Listen, point and say

Ex.  2, p. 17

V. Speaking

Ex.3, p.17

Look at the pictures in activity 1.

Ask and answer.

VI. Writing

Workbook p.10

1) Count and write: teddy bears, dolls, yo-yos, presents.

2) Ask and answer:

How many yo-yos? (10)

How many (bears)? (5)

How many (presents) (7)

How many (dolls)?  (8) 

VII. The play

Missing words

Stick the flashcards with drawings of toys on the board with tape.

 Have students say the words on the flashcards in the order they appear on the board.

Ask them to close their eyes, while you remove one of the cards

When they re-open their eyes, they have to name which word is missing.

After you have done that a couple of times, start taking out two or three flashcards at a time.

III. Ending of the lesson

The children sing the song (Ex. 1, p. 16.)

The teacher and Winnie the Pooh say good-bye children.
