Objective:

  • Introduce learners to American food culture.
  • Expand vocabulary related to food.
  • Develop listening comprehension skills.
  • Review the previous topic: "Ukrainian food."

Materials:
Audio recording or video about American food, picture cards, flashcards with vocabulary words.

 

1. Warm-up

  • Teacher asks learners:
    • What did you eat for breakfast today?
    • What is your favorite food?
    • Can you name any American dishes?
  • Learners share their answers.
  • The teacher shows a few pictures of American food to spark interest.

 

2. Lead-in

  • Discussion questions:
    • What are some traditional Ukrainian dishes?
    • How are they prepared?
    • Are they healthy?
  • The teacher shows pictures of borsch, varenyky, deruny and asks learners to describe them.
  • Comparison: Do you think American food is similar to Ukrainian food? Why or why not?

 

3. Pre-listening (New Vocabulary)

  • The teacher introduces the following words with pictures and explanations:
    • Pancakes – thin, round cakes made of batter
    • Cola – a popular soft drink
    • Fried potatoes – potatoes cooked in oil
    • Sausages – a type of meat, usually in a long shape
    • Burger – a sandwich with a meat patty, usually in a bun
  • Pronunciation practice: learners repeat the words after the teacher.
  • Game: "Guess the Dish" – the teacher describes a food item, and learners guess the name.

 

4. Listening

  • Learners listen to an audio recording or watch a short video about American food.
  • First listening: learners check off the food items they hear.
  • Second listening: learners answer comprehension questions:
    • What do Americans eat for breakfast?
    • What is fast food?
    • Is all American food healthy?
  • Pair discussion: learners compare their answers.

 

5. Post-listening

  • Learners discuss in pairs:
    • How is American food different from Ukrainian food?
    • Would you like to try American food? Why or why not?
  • Role-play: one learner describes a dish, and the other guesses.
  • Class discussion:
    • Is American food always healthy?
    • What makes food healthy or unhealthy?

 

6. Homework

  • Write 5-7 sentences about your favorite American dish.

  • Create a mini-presentation about healthy eating habits in America.

  • The teacher asks:
