Grade: 9
Topic: Great scientists
Skill focus: Reading comprehension
1. Warm-up
Teacher shows portraits of famous scientists (Newton, Einstein, Curie, Darwin, Tesla).
Learners guess their names and fields of study.
Quick question: “Which scientist do you think changed the world the most? Why?”
2. Lead-in
Brainstorming: Write the word “SCIENCE” on the board. Learners suggest words or phrases connected with science (discovery, experiment, laboratory, progress, future).
Teacher introduces topic: “Today we’ll read about great scientists who changed our knowledge of the world.”
3. Pre-reading
Vocabulary preparation: discovery, experiment, theory, invention, Nobel Prize, physics, chemistry, biology.
Prediction activity: Teacher gives learners short clues about a text (“A scientist who worked on radioactivity”, “A man who explained gravity”). Learners predict who will be mentioned.
4. Reading
First reading (skimming for general idea): Learners read short adapted texts about 3–4 famous scientists (Isaac Newton, Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin).
Task: Match the scientist with the field of study.
Second reading (scanning for details): Learners complete a fact-file chart:
| Scientist | Field | Main discovery/invention | Impact |
Third reading (critical thinking): Answer True/False or multiple-choice questions.
5. Post-reading
Discussion in pairs: “Which scientist would you like to meet and what would you ask him/her?”
Role-play: One learner is a journalist, another is a scientist (Newton, Curie, Einstein, Darwin) – short interview.
Creative writing: “Imagine you are a scientist of the future. What would you invent or discover?” (4–5 sentences).
6. Homework
Research task: Choose one scientist not mentioned in the text (Nikola Tesla, Galileo Galilei, Stephen Hawking). Write a short report (8–10 sentences) about their life and achievements.
Optional: Find a quote from a scientist and explain its meaning in your own words.
7. Feedback and reflection
Teacher asks: “What new facts did you learn today?”
Learners share interesting details from the text.
Quick reflection: Write on a sticky note one word that describes how you feel about science after today’s lesson (inspiring, difficult, important, creative).
