2. Lead-in

  • Ask learners: “What should you do if you get a small cut? What mustn't you do?”
  • Write learners’ ideas on the board and introduce the lesson objectives: “By the end of the lesson, you will be able to read about first aid, learn new vocabulary, and use modals correctly.”

Activity: Working with Text

Injuries and First Aid

Accidents can happen anywhere, so it is important to know basic first aid. If you cut your finger while using scissors, you should clean the wound with antiseptic cream and cover it with a plaster. If you have a burn or sunburn, you need to cool the skin with cold water and apply a special cream. A sprain can be painful, so you should put ice on it and wrap it with an elastic bandage. If you get a scratch, wash it with water and use cotton to clean it. For more serious injuries, like a deep wound, you might need a bandage to stop the bleeding. When someone feels sick, they may have to take medicine. If you hurt your leg, you mustn't walk on it and should see a doctor. In some cases, you need to call an ambulance for help. If you get a cut, you don't need to panic, just clean and cover it. People must be careful with sharp objects to avoid injuries. You can't ignore serious injuries, as they can get worse. You don't have to go to the hospital for a small wound, but for big injuries, it is necessary. Knowing first aid can save lives and help people recover quickly.

  • Distribute or display a short text: “Injuries and First Aid” (prepared in advance, containing key vocabulary and modals).
  • First Reading: Learners read individually and underline new words.
  • Second Reading :

Questions:

  1. What should you do if you cut your finger?
  2. How can you treat a burn or sunburn?
  3. Why is it important to use an elastic bandage for a sprain?
  4. When do you need to call an ambulance?

  • Discuss answers as a class.

5. Post-reading (Group Work)

  • Divide learners into two groups:
    • Group A: Creates a poster with “First Aid Rules” using modals (must/mustn’t/have to, etc.).
    • Group B: Writes a short dialogue between a doctor and a patient discussing an injury and treatment.
  • Each group presents their work.

6. Homework

  • Write 5 sentences using modals to give first aid advice.
  • Optional: Research and prepare a short report about first aid kits and their importance.

7. Feedback and Reflection

  • Ask learners:
    • “What new words did you learn today?”
    • “How do you feel about using modals?”
    • “Do you think first aid knowledge is important?”
  • Give positive feedback and encourage learners to apply their knowledge in real life.
