Lesson Plan

Grade: 7
Topic: What’s сooking?
Aim : To develop learners' listening skills through a cooking-themed activity while expanding their vocabulary related to kitchen utensils and encouraging practical application of the words in contextual speaking tasks.

Skill Focus: Listening
Vocabulary: plate, knife, saucepan, teaspoon, frying pan, fork, tablespoon, oven dish

1. Warm-up

  • Start with a quick brainstorming session:
    • Write the question on the board: What tools do you use in the kitchen?
    • Learners raise their hands and name tools they know in English.
  • Show a picture of a kitchen or cooking utensils and ask learners to identify as many tools as they can.

2. Lead-in

  • Display flashcards or images of the vocabulary tools (plate, knife, saucepan, etc.).
  • Pronounce each word and ask learners to repeat after you.
  • Discuss their uses in cooking (e.g., What do we use a frying pan for?).
  • Write the vocabulary words on the board, grouping them into cutlery, dishes, and cooking tools.

3. Pre-listening

  • Write the question on the board: What do you think happens in a kitchen?
  • Pair learners up to discuss for two minutes.
  • Provide a short list of key phrases they might hear (e.g., pass the knife, stir the soup, use the saucepan).
  • Give a brief overview of the listening task: “You will hear two people discussing cooking a meal.”

4. Listening

  • Play an audio recording or read a short dialogue about two people cooking a meal.
  • Learners listen and fill in the blanks in a worksheet with missing vocabulary (e.g., I need a ____ to stir the soup).
  • Play the recording twice for clarity.
  • Check answers as a class.

5. Post-listening

  • In small groups, learners discuss the following questions:
    • What did the people in the recording cook?
    • What utensils and tools did they use?
  • Each group presents their answers briefly.
  • Role-play: In pairs, learners act out a cooking scene using the vocabulary learned.

6. Homework

  • Write a short paragraph (5-6 sentences) about a meal you cooked or helped to cook. Use at least 5 of the target vocabulary words.
  • Optional: Draw and label a picture of a kitchen with the vocabulary words.

7. Feedback and Reflection

  • Ask learners:
    • What new words did you learn today?
    • Was the listening activity easy or hard? Why?
  • Use a thumbs-up/thumbs-down system for feedback on the lesson.
  • End by summarizing the key vocabulary and encouraging learners to practice it at home.
