Christmas is the time of giving

All the love you harbor close

Whom you may not see that much

Bring them all together

And they will all feel touched.

Pupil 1: One of the main symbol of Great Britain is holly. It  is  an  evergreen  plant with sharp-pointed  leaves and  red  berries .People  put holly  on Christmas  pudding.  They also   put holly to decorate their homes.  A wreath of holly should be hung on the front door and greenery used to decorate the windowsills etc .It is a very old tradition .Long ago people began to put holly in their homes during the dark cold  winters .They  liked to look the holly and think about the spring and the sun.

Pupil 2: Another English Christmas custom is Boxing Day. The poor received money from their landlords in clay (глиняних) pots with a hole in the top. These small pots were called "piglets". This is where piggy banks in the shape of a pig appeared.

Pupil 3: The custom of putting gifts in a stocking or sock is also associated with Victorian England. There is an explanation for this: "Santa Claus" traveled through the air and entered houses through the chimney. Coming down into one of the houses, he dropped several gold coins into one sock, which was hung to dry over the hearth. Since then, on Christmas Eve, socks have been hung on the fireplace in the hope that something will fall to the socks.

Pupil 4: The table was covered with a red tablecloth, with a Christmas wreath with candles in the middle. The traditional Christmas dish is turkey with vegetables, fried potatoes, sausages in bacon and fruit pudding. The recipe for this cake (muffin) is passed down from generation to generation. Without this cake, as without a Christmas tree, Christmas is impossible for our friends. A few coins are also put in it. It is believed that they will bring success to the one who finds them in his piece of pudding. Pate and gingerbread are also important.

T: So, we will move from foreign holidays and traditions to Ukrainian ones. One of the greatest holidays of the year for Ukrainians is Christmas. Holy evening is a special, unforgettable time of the year. The eve of Christmas is full of deep church ceremonies, rich folk rituals and customs.

Since ancient times, in Ukraine by the whole atmosphere  people create on Christmas Day an image of wealth, happiness, peace in their home.

http://ethnography.org.ua/sites/default/files/styles/300x/public/diduh-zmotanyy-z-koloskiv-1404823734_17.jpg?itok=D4imhMOQ Pupil 5: The main attribute of Christmas for Ukrainians is Didukh.

which was brought into the house and placed on the porch on Christmas Eve. Christmas is the time of God's descent (сходження Бога) to earth in order to return the lost paradise to man, and the star on the top of the tree symbolizes the Bethlehem star, which announced the birth of the son of God

Since ancient times, there has been a tradition of putting hay under the table, which was a symbol of the manger, pouring some grain on the table, placing cloves of garlic in the corners (it protects the family from evil spirits) and covering it with a tablecloth. The hostesses prepared 12 Lenten dishes the day before, symbolizing the 12 apostles and the 12 months of the year.

Pupil 6: They prepared uzvar, borscht - as a traditional Ukrainian dish, cabbage soup (какпусняк), pampushki (or bread), fish, beans (and also dishes with peas), cabbage rolls (голубці), mushrooms, dumplings, but the main dish is kutya with honey and poppy seeds.

On Christmas Eve, all the family and all the livestock must be at home so that there will be peace and quiet after Christmas.

As soon as the Christmas star appears in the sky, everyone sits down at the table, which should have twelve different dishes. The host invites the souls of the  ancestors  (предків) to dinner.

T: So, as you have already seen, Christmas in both Ukraine and England has a great history, customs and traditions.

T: And we have many traditions in common.

So, your next task is to guess which country's tradition is being mentioned and raise the corresponding flag, or flags, if it is correct for both countries.

T: Yes, the common melody and anthem of Christmas in both Ukraine and Great Britain is the Christmas carol "Shchedryk" by our Ukrainian composer - Mykola Leontovych, on which he worked all his life.  The melody has been featured in many TV series and films, including the perennial Christmas hit "Home Alone," as well as the film "Harry Potter". So let us honor the memory of the great composer and combine the Christmas traditions of Ukrainians and Englishmen with the world-famous carol "Shchedryk".
