Sport is health, strength and fun

Objective:

     -         to develop pupils' language skills in new communicative situations on                             the basis of  interactive technologies;                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       

  •                      to widen vocabulary on the topic with the help of games,  poems and  pictures;
  •                      to improve pupils' listening and speaking skills;
  •                      to improve pupils' in discussion;
  •                      to develop  pupils' reading skills;
  •                      to contribute to pupils' love to sport and a healthy way of life;

-        to broaden students` knowledge about ukainian sportsmen and to be             

                    proud of them.

Outcomes: by the end of the lesson pupils will be able:

  •                             to speak on the topic ” The World Cup”;
  •                             to understand meaning of the topic;
  •                             to answer the questions about different kinds of sports;
  •                             to the new vocabulary on the topic;
  •                             to make up their own dialogues   about sports in their life.

Equipment:

               cards,

               pictures,

               texts,

               spidergram,

               computer.

 

Epigraphs:

   “Sport is a challenge to a person.”

   “You never know what you can do till you try.”

   “If you want to know what qualities you have, go in for sports and you will see.”    

            

Procedure:

 

  1. Greeting.

Teacher:     The bell has gone. Stand up, please.

                   Good morning, boys and girls!

Pupils:            Good morning to the school,

                       Good morning to the flag,

                       Good morning to the pencils and the pens.

Good morning to the teacher,

Good morning to the guests,

Good morning to learning with my friends! 

  1. Warming up.

Teacher:  Sit down, please.

                 Now, please, answer my questions. 

1.    How are you?

2.    How`s it going?

3.    How do you feel today?

4.    Are you O.K.?

Pupils:

  1.  I`m very well, thank you.
  2. I`m fine, thank you.
  3. Everything is O.K.
  4. “First-rate”.

 Teacher:   By the way, did you do your morning exercises?

Pupils: Yes, we did.

Teacher: How do you think morning exercises are a good way to start your day?

Pupils: I think morning exercises are a good way to start my day. Morning exercises help me to keep in a good health.

 

 Phonetic drill:

      1. Pupils read the poem “Sport”

           Sport is fun for girls and boys.

           It’s much better than the toys.

          You can sledge and ski and skate

          And play snowballs with Kate.

          You can swim and play football,

          Hockey, tennis, basketball.

          You can jump and you can run,

2. Girls read lines 1, 3, 5; boys read  lines 2, 4, 6.

3. Pupils say which sports and games from the poem they can do.

 Example:

P1: I can swim.

 P2: I can swim too!

P3: I can ski.

P4: I can play tennis.

 

III. Vocabulary drill

 1. I know you like a game. So, our today’s lesson will be the game. Now,
           repeat the words after me.

2. Look at this word. You should make up word connected with sport,  which  
    begin with the letter forming the word “sport”.

Today, at the lesson we are going to speak about sport,different kinds of sport,you will learn about famous sportsmen,listen and read some stories and do some exercirses.

3. Do we ‘play football’, ‘go football’ or ‘do football’? (play football). Let’s read the first explanation in the box on page 30. (We use play with the ball games).

Read the second explanation (We use go with sports ending in -ing).

Read the third explanation (We use do with other sports).

Look at the screen let’s divide sports into three columns

(swimming, tennis, windsurfing, football, karate, aerobics, volleyball, basketball, judo, cycling, skateboarding, athletics)

4. As you know, to play sports we need some equipment and a special place for  
     playing. Your next task is to say what we need to go in for this or that sport.
     Match the words from two columns.

Then read your sentences.

  6. to go in for swimming
  7. to go in for running
  8. to go in for boxing

IV. Listening. Pupils listen to the descriptions of sports and answer the question: What kind of sport is it?

 

What kind of sport is it?

  1.                 It is a team game. Men and women, girls and boys can play it. The players have a ball and play it with their hands. There are six players in each of two teams. (volleyball)
  2.                 It is a very popular game in England and in Ukraine. The players kick the ball with their feet; they mustn’t touch the ball with their hands. The game lasts go minutes and has two halves. The players try to score a goal. (football)
  3.                 It is one of the most popular games in the world it was first played in Canada. It is winter kinds of games, only men and boys play it. Many people like to watch this game on TV. The players skate on the ice, they use special sticks. (ice hockey)

 

V. Reading activity. Now, you read the text” The World Cup”.

Ali is playing with the computer.

He chooses “Football” and presses the blue button.

Ali is in the future! He is a footballer and he is playing in the World Cup. The match is Brazil-England and Ali is in the English team.

The match started at three o`clock. At half past three the Brazilian team scored a goal.

At quarter to four it was half time. The score was one-nil to Brazil.

It`s now ten to five. A man is talking on the television.Listen!

Can the English team score a goal? The Brazilians have got the ball. Peres is passing it to Mendes… But Ali, the English player,is next to Mendes…

But Ali is running in front of Mendes… and he`s got the ball!

Ali is running fast. Number 8, the Brazilian,is behind Ali – can stop him?No!Ali is too fast…

Ali is in front of the goal. The Brazilian goalkeeper is waiting… Ali is going to shoot… He shoots…And it`s a goal! It`s a goal! And that`s the whistle! So it`s one all.That was a wonderful game and a wonderful goal!

 

Teacher: Now answer my questions.

Questions.

1. What is the boy`s name? The boy`s name is Ali.

2. Where is he playing?     He is playing in the World Cup.  

3. Which teams are playing? The match is Brazil-England. Or The teams Brazil-England are playing.

 

4. In which team is Ali? Ali is in English team.

5. What time did the match start? The match started at three o`clock.

6. Who was the best player? The best player was Ali.

7. What was the score? The score was one-one.

 

Ok, well done. Do you like the story? Would you like to play at the English team?

I hope in future you`ll be the famous footballers and you`ll be in the English team.

 

VІ. Speaking. (Додаток 2. ) And now we`ll remain our Ukrainian sportsmen. You look at the photo and say “Who is this?”

2. These are Klitschko Brothers.They are famous boxers.

3. This is Liliya Podkopayeva. She is a famous gymnast.

4. This is Serhii Bubka. He is a famous athlete.

5. This is Yana Klochkova. She is a famous swimmer.

6. This is Vasyl Virastyuk. He is a famous strongman.

Teacher: We`ll know “What are the most popular sport activities in Great Britain?

Now, you`ll watch a video.

-Why did he have such name?

-Because he played football very well and became one of the youngest champions in the history of football.

-He is from Germany.

-He was a member of Benneton, Ferrari and Mercedes.

-What famous tennis champions of the world do you know?

-American tennis player Andre Agassi. He was the First Racket of the world for a long time.

-Does he play nowadays?

-No, but he helps ill children.

 

T: Imagine your favourite sportsman is giving an interview to a journalist. You have his answers. Try to guess the questions of the journalist.
