CHRISTMAS IN UKRAINE

Christmas comes in Ukraine on the 7th of January. But the day before it and the evening which is called Sviatvechir are very important too.

The hostess must wake up early that day. First she must cross herself, stand to prepare twelve Lenten dishes for the Holy Dinner. It can be: borsch, fish, mushrooms, vegetable pies. The main dish «kutia» is cooked from wheat grains, walnuts, raisins, poppy seeds and dry fruit compote.

The Holy Dinner has to start with tasting «kutia» - the dish, which symbolizes health and wealth. Then other twelve dishes go.

January 7, the day of Christmas, is full of joy. There is a custom of visiting close and distant relatives. Children are sent to bring Christmas meal to their godparents, grandparents, aunts and uncles who treat them heartly in their turn with the most delicious food they have.

Public life is also very active during these days. Scenes from the Bible about Jessus Christ’s birth are staged in churches, schools and theatres. Charity fairs make the poorest feel happy. Everyone welcomes people singing koliadkas and thus blessing the house with the spirit of Christmas.
