. Introducing the aims of the lesson

T – You are absolutely right. There are many problems that our planet faces nowadays. It suffers greatly and we suffer together with it. And our todays lesson will be devoted to this issue.  Have a look at the pictures on the board. What do you think we are going to discuss and to what conclusion should we come to the end of the lesson?

P1

T – Correct. And you will do it while reading some texts on the topic, you will practice in speaking , listening and you will also work in groups.

T – To build up our further discussion, let us see how well you remember the vocabulary, you had to learn for today. Let us do some tasks to brush it up. Look at your cards. Try to match the words with their pictures or definitions. One pupil will work on interactive board.

Let us see if you know the words well. ( marks)

3. Reading practice  Group work.

Teacher. Well done. Now we will continue discussing the ecological situation in the world. Let us split into three teams. Come to me and choose the ribbon. It will tell you what group you are in.   You are going to read three texts about some ecological problems. Your task is to be attentive because you need to fill in the table with the information needed. You should find the names of these problems, their causes and consequences. You should use your QR – code readers on your mobile phones. When I press the button on my bell, switch to another text. Come up to me and choose the paper that will tell you what team you are in.

Deforestation

One of the biggest ecological problems is deforestation. It is caused by human activity. People cut down trees in rainforests to clear the land for farming or to build roads. Logging companies sell wood for furniture and building houses. All these careless actions lead to the lack of fresh air, as less trees produce less oxygen and release more CO2. In addition, lots of exotic animal and plant species live in rainforests and when people destroy these forests, animals lose their home and become endangered species. Some trees in rainforests are a source of important medicines which help to cure serious diseases and with their disappearance the production of these medicines will be impossible.

Global Warming

The main cause of the increasing global warming is increasing level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Burning fossil fuels causes carbon dioxide to store in the atmosphere which traps heat and becomes the reason of earth warming and greenhouse effect causing global warming. Human beings are cutting down trees and forests to a great level per year which causes carbon dioxide gas to store in the atmosphere. Release of nitrous oxide N2O from the fertilizers (used for crops) and gases used in the refrigerator are also the main factors of global warming. Burning of wood at high level also releases harmful gases. The effects are horrible. Polar ice caps melt and sea level increases which can lead to flooding in some coastal areas. Weather patterns change as temperature changes. Another effect is the species loss of habitat. For instance, polar bears and tropical frogs will be extinct due to climate change. Next effect is more hurricanes will occur which damages the economy of any country and causes lots of diseases and even deaths.

Water pollution

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies like lakes, rivers, oceans and groundwater very often by human activities.  Many water bodies near urban areas (cities and towns) are highly polluted. This is the result of both garbage dumped by individuals and dangerous chemicals legally or illegally dumped by manufacturing industries, health centers, schools and market places. Another cause is oil spills produced by tankers which transport oil by seas or oceans. Water pollution affects drinking water. It becomes contaminated and leads to many diseases and deaths. People can get diseases such as hepatitis by eating seafood that has been poisoned. In many poor nations, there is always outbreak of cholera and other diseases as a result of poor drinking water. It also leads to the extinction of water animals and plants.

T - Now it is high time to finish reading and let us check the information you found. On the blackboard you can see the mind map that is not completed. Your task is to fill it with the names of problems, they are on the blue colour, their causes – it is yellow colour and results – pictures on the green colour. Your team will work with deforestation, yours- with water pollution and yours – with global warming. Come up to the blackboard and do it, please.

T – Present us the information about each problem, please. ( is caused by, leads to)

T – Thank you very much. Nice job. We have just discussed the causes and consequences of some problems , now it is time to find solutions to them. First, I suggest you listening to an interview between an interviewer and K……….. You will listen to it only once. Your task is to do the post-reading test. You have 20 sec to look through the questions now. Choose the correct variant of answer while listening..

( Listening practice)

T – Are you ready? Give me your papers , please, I will check them for tomorrow. Now, try to remember some information, please.

  • What problems have been discussed in the interview?
  • What does the girl do to solve the problem?
  • What does she suggest us doing?

T – You have just learnt about K and her way of solving …. Think of the possible. Solutions  to the problems on our poster. Let us finish our scheme. Come up here again and try to find the pictures of possible solutions to air pollution, deforestation and global warming. ( stick and  speak)

Home assignment

T – Today we discussed some urgent ecological problems but there are too many other problems that need to be solved. Your task is to work in groups and make a fishbone. Where you should think again about their causes, effects and possible ways out. I have already divided you in teams(…..). Take the paper with the problem you will discuss with your team.

 Wall of wishes.

To sum everything up, let us make a wall of wishes. Think of the promises you could give Mother Earth. Write them  down on your stickers and stick them on our wall.

11.Summary.

The topic of our today's conversation was very serious. There are a lot of problems but, unfortunately, we don’t have enough time to discuss all of them.

Today environmental issues are much spoken and written about on TV, radio and in the newspapers. Fortunately, it’s not too late to solve these problems. If we take actions now, there might be some hope for the future.Together we can save the planet and all of us with it. If we want to survive, we must do our best to solve these problems. It is important to join our efforts in the struggle for survival. We are responsible for preserving our planet for future generations. The life of future generations depends on our attitude towards environment and the way each of us treats nature.

We’ll have to stop now. That’s all for today.I'd like to thank you for good work at the lesson. All of you worked very well. I give excellent marks to..., good- to :, etc. I wish you good luck.

The lesson is over. See you later. Goodbye!
