Poetry is the music of the soul

(Recitation festival)

A: Poetry turns words into art. Poetry speaks to the soul in a way everyday conversation cannot. Poetry can hurt and it can heal. Poetry can express emotions even in the most intensely joyous or grievous times.

B: Poetry is the state of the soul, the music of inspiration and love. When the poetry touches our hearts with its solemnity and tenderness, we feel special delicacy and festivity.

A: And our today’s festival of poetry and music welcomes you to watch and enjoy the rhymes, limericks and poems, performed by the students of our gymnasium.

B: As the year of English is coming to the end, we devote our party to the beauty and glory of our beloved language.

A: So let us start with the youngest participants.

B: It’s well known that little kids enjoy funny rhymes and fairy tales. But besides listening, our kids are fond of performing. And we welcome the pupils of the 4-th form with their lovely fairy tale “The Great Big Turnip”.

B: Thank you, our dear little heroes. You are really talented and enthusiastic.

B: No doubt love is one of the most popular themes described in literature. Cinderella is probably the most well-known love story. The girls of all times, nationalities and ages have been dreaming of a prince, who will come and change their life. Let us enjoy the story presented by the pupils of the 4-th form.

B: We thank our little actors and actresses. I believe after this wonderful performance our Cinderella will soon become popular with many boys in the gymnasium.

A: English poetry and prose is various. It can be serious and funny. It can be full of incredible nonsense. We would like to present you the limerick by Edward Lear “The Owl and the Pussy Cat” performed by the student of the 3-d form Kate Kustynets.

(“The Owl and the Pussy Cat”)

A: We thank you for your wonderful performing.

B: As we see our children like rhymes about animals. This is a story about a cat which wants to find a mouse to eat, but suddenly… Listen, what will happen! We welcome the third-formers Vlada Kyseliova and Sofia Tarasiuk with the poem “Pussy cat and the goldfish”.

(“Pussy cat and the goldfish”)

B: Thanks a lot. You are pretty funny. So, children, be careful with your pets!

A: Well, besides reciting poems about pets, our kids enjoy performing and acting the way animals do. Let’s meet a cat that is lazy and fat. And welcome some mice that are funny and nice. Dear 4-th formers, you are welcome.

(“The Cat” – 4-th formers )

A: Besides animals, our children are great nature lovers. They enjoy spending free time outdoors when the weather is snowy and frosty. And their beautiful rhymes will tell us more about it. It’s high time to welcome our 4-th formers Angelina Ukhnaliova-Yaroshevych and Kharytyna Ukhnaliova.

(“The Snowflake”

“Snowball”)

A: Besides beautiful rhymes the girls would also like to entertain us with the Christmas song. Let’s sing together!

(Song “We wish you a Merry Christmas”)

A: Thank you for such a beautiful song and wonderful performing.

A: Do you know that there are also imaginary authors, such as Mother Goose, for instance?

B: The imaginary author of collection of fairy tales and nursery rhymes?

A: Right. So listen and enjoy the Mother Goose rhyme “Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard” performed by the pupil of the 5-th form Valentyn Novosydliuk.

(“Old Mother Hubbard went to the cupboard”)

A: Thank you very much.

B: Both children and adults enjoy funny rhymes and stories which make our life better. Enjoy the nursery rhyme “There was an old lady, who swallowed a fly” performed by the fifth-former Anastasia Shykhevych.

(“There was an old lady, who swallowed a fly”)

B: Thanks a lot.

A: Today we can’t but mention the poems which describe school with its rules and teachers, lessons and breaks and lots of homework…

B: But school isn’t only studying. It’s also much fun. Welcome the 8-th former Olia Paladiichuk with some funny poems about our second home.

(“Funny poems about school”)

B: You really make us laugh, thank you.

A: Without any doubt there are many poems about beauty: the beauty of people and their emotions, the beauty of love, and certainly, the beauty of nature.

B: Every season is beautiful in its way. Moreover, every month presents us with its unique and marvelous gifts.

A: The students of the 8-th form Sofia Zyl and Roman Muzychuk will try to prove it with the poem “12 months”.

(“12 months”)

A: We thank our participants. Really, such poems give us the message that nature is the one which makes us happy when we are sad.

B: The central idea of the next poem is the expression of comfort and cheering the author finds in the beauty of observing the daffodils.

A: Welcome the 8-th former Daria Gryb with the poem “Daffodils”.

(“Daffodils”)

A: Thank you. Your performing fills the heart with pleasure, delight and joy.

B: As we see English poetry is rich in charming beauty and deep emotions. And our next participants will prove it one more time.  So we welcome the students of the 7-th form Eva Kononova and Julia Martyniuk to present the poem “You light up my life” written by Kwitka Tsisyk, an American singer of Ukrainian songs.

(“You light up my life”)

B: Thanks a lot for this wonderful poem.

A: Well, our life is full of events which often change us. But we would always like to remain young and full of beans. How old are you? And how old is your soul? Let us listen to the touching poem “May you stay forever young” presented by the student of the 8-th form Georgii Danylyshyn .

(“May you stay forever young”)

A: Your performing makes us realize the sense of human being. Thank you.

B: There are lots of authors who describe the incredible beauty of women in their poems. Lord Byron is among them. His poem “She walks in beauty” expresses the woman’s exceptional beauty, internal as well as external. Listen and enjoy it performed by Alina Suprun, the student of the 8-th form.

(“She walks in beauty” )

B: It sounds and looks gorgeous, thank you.

A: When the rhyme touches the heart, it awakens the soul. When the words make friends with the sound, it gives birth to the music. And when the soul is inspired by the music, it dances…

B: We welcome the students of the 5-th form Diana and Denys Lysenko with their brilliant dance.

(Ball Dance)

B: We thank you a lot. You are so young and so talented!

A: Well, you see our students are rather skillful, talented and enthusiastic.

B: Mark Twain once wrote, ”With courage you will dare to take risks, have the strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble. Courage is the foundation of integrity.”

A: Our next participant has enough courage to learn and present the poem about a courageous girl. It’s high time to greet the 11-th former Ann Baranetska with the poem “Isabel”.

(“Isabel”)

A: Thank you. So don’t let fear stop you, like Ann does.

B: Sure, if we have enough courage, it seems we can overcome any difficulties. But where to get strength and manhood to live an ordinary life if you are not just ordinary person?..

A: This is a thrilling story about a blind man who lives the life without luxury of vision. The poem “Solitude” is being performed by Solomia Odemchuk, the student of the 11-th form.

(“Solitude”)

A: Thank you very much.

B: If everything could happen in the way we wish… If all our dreams could come true… If we only could…

A: Cold winter evenings make us think about sense of life and difficulties that we face, but in any situation a man remains a man. Meet Lubomyr Paladiychuk with   the poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling.

( “If”)

A: Thanks a lot for your performing.

B: There is no poetry without love and there is no love without poetry. And they are always combined with music. For ages humanity expresses their feelings by songs.

A: Yes, indeed. Music reveals what we can not put into words and which cannot remain silent.

B: The students of the 10-th form know for certain how love can be depicted in a song. The vivid example is the famous song “Hallelujah”. Enjoy it singing together.

(The song “Hallelujah”)

B: Thank you, girls. This song touches the soul and whispers to the heart that love is eternal.

A: If I were blue, I’d be the sky.

B: If I were red, I’d be fire making molten rock.

A: If I were yellow, I’d be a tulip.

B: If I were green, I’d be a tree or grass making the ground look beautiful.

Yes, beautiful indeed!

A: Our festival  is coming to the end. So let us live a colourful life!

B: And let it be beautiful! Or let it just be…

(Beatles –“Let it be”)
