Introductory Talk
T: Hello, guests, boys and girls! I am very glad to see you at our lesson today.
P: So are we.
T: Who is absent?
P: All are present.
Aim
T:We’ll speak about one of the most beautiful countries in the world. We’ll have a travel around Great Britain. You will show your knowledge of the United Kingdom because we are going to continue our talk devoted to this country. We’ll speak about the geographical location of the country, the capital of the country, the British people and many other interesting things. So, let’s begin our lesson.
Warming up
T: Look at the blackboard and imagine that you are in GD. What do you associate Great Britain with?
P: First of all I associate Great Britain with the royal family, because the UK is a Parliamentary Monarchy and the Queen is formally the head of the state. But in fact the country is ruled by the Parliament consisting of two houses: the House of commons and the House of Lords.
P: To begin with I’d like to say that G.B. is an ancient country with its own culture and arts. There are many famous buildings all over the country. One of them is Big Ben, a famous clock tower, which has four faces and a very big loud bell. It was called Big Ban after Sir Benjamin Hall.
P: As you know, The British are well known for always chatting about the weather. This is because the weather in Britain is so changeable – you never know what it will be like. You can often hear people say “if the weather allows”. That’s why they usually have umbrellas.
P: The British are considered to be well-mannered, practical and careful. And also they are known as great tea drinkers.
P: The official language of the country is English – language of international communication.
P: It’s universally accepted that the British are a sporting nation. They invented and developed many of the sports and games which are now played in different countries.
P: The London Eye is a modern giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in London. Also known as the Millennium Wheel. It was opened to the public on February, 1 in 2000.And the Millennium Bridgewas opened the same year by the Queen.
Check on Homework
T: Now let’s check your homework. Pay attention! Look at the map and answer my questions:
P: The full name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
P: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated to the west of the Continent of Europe.
P: It consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
T: Great Britain is surrounded by seas on all sides and is separated from the continent by the North Sea and the English Channel, the western coast of Great Britain is washed by the North Sea.
P: The British Isles have many rivers, but they are not very long. The longest river is Severn, which is in the South-west of England. The Themes, on which London stands, is not so long as the Severn, though it is much shorter, is the deepest river in the country. It is the longest and the most important river in G.B.
P: The climate of any country much depends on its geographical location. Thanks to the Gulf Stream the climate of G.B. is mild. The weather is often foggy and rainy. Summer is not very hot and winter is not very cold. Winter temperature seldom falls below zero.
P: There are many mountains in the north of England and in Scotland, but they are not very high. The highest mountain in G.B. is Ben Nevis.
P: The Gulf Stream is a warm current which flows from the Gulf of Mexico towards Europe.
P: The surface of the country is mostly flat.

Pre-listening task
T: Do you know anything about Australia?
P: Australia is the smallest continent. It is very hot there. 20 million inhabitants live on the coast, where the climate is good.

P: Flora and fauna of Australia differ greatly. There are a lot of unique animals and plants.

While-listening task.
T: Listen to the text and think are the statements true or false.
Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. However less than 20 million people live there.
The first people in Australia were aborigines. But today they are only 1,5 per cent of all Australians. Most of the people are descendants of British settlers. In recent years a lot of people have come from other European countries and from Asia.
The climate in Australia is usually very warm so Australians love spot and outdoor activities: swimming, scuba diving, surfing, rugby and cricket are all very popular. A lot of Australia’s animals: like the kangaroo, the koala, the platypus are unique. Australia also has some poisonous snakes, spiders. At school children have to learn first aids for snake and spider bites.

Along the north-east coast is Great Barrier Reef. This is the largest coral reef in the world. the largest city is Sidney with its Harbor Bridge and Opera House.
The 2000 Olympics were held in Sidney. Sidney isn’t the capital of Australia. Most Australians live in the south-east corner between Sidney and Melbourne. This is because 90 per cent of the country is very dry. Australians call this dry area the outback. There are some huge farms here with millions of sheep and cattle.
The children on these farms can’t go to school because the nearest town is too far away. They study at home and they talk to their teacher by radio. There is also a flying doctor service where the doctor will come to you by plane.
Australia is a rich country. Its farms produce meat, fruit, vegetables, wool, cereals and milk. There are a lot of mines too. They produce gold, silver, iron, diamonds, copper and many other things.
T: Listen to the text once more. (2.5 min)I hope you are ready to answer my questions on the text:
