The Present Continuous

LEVEL I

Exercise 1.Form the –ing form of the following verbs.    

   To retell, to write, to put, to gather, to show, to shut, to ask, to bathe, to prepare, to sit, to go, to snow, to clean, to get, to make, to lie, to dig, to draw, to look, to be, to recite, to stop, to begin, to take, to swim, to prefer, to tie, to compel, to give, to travel, to die, to see, to refer, to fix, to cancel, to fax.

 

Exercise 2.Open the brackets using the Present Continuous Tense.

1. Mr Black (to explain) a grammar rule. 2. The woman (to play) with her cat. 3. The boys (to run). 4. I (to wait) for them. 5. We (to have) tea. 6. It (to rain) now. 7. You (to clean) the blackboard. 8. They (to go) to school. 9. She (to take) part in the sports competitions.

 

Exercise 3.Paraphrase the following sentences as in the model.

Model: Clean the blackboard. (I) – I am cleaning the blackboard.

1. Go to the door. (I) 2. Stand at the blackboard. (You) 3. Write a sentence on the blackboard. (She) 4. Sit at your desk. (We) 5. Hold the duster in your left hand. (He) 6. Exercise 4. Put the verbs in brackets into the Present Continuous and complete the sentences. Use the short form of the verb “to be”.

Example: They…breakfast. (to have) – They`re having breakfast.

1. Tony …a comic. (to read) 2. I … a shower. (to have) 3. Jane … her homework. (to do) 4. Mrs. Hill … the clothes. (to iron) 5. Ben … his teeth (to clean) 6. My brother … TV. (to watch) 7. Exercise 5. Answer the questions.

1. What are you doing now? 2. Whom are you speaking to? 3. What are you speaking about? 4. Who is asking you questions? 5. Whose questions are you answering? 6. Are you sitting or standing while answering the questions? 7. Where are you standing (sitting)? 8. What class are you having now? 9. Which lesson are you studying? 10. Are looking at the blackboard or at the teacher? 11.Whom are you looking at? 12. What is your neighbour doing? 13. Where are you going after classes?

 

Exercise 6. Make the following interrogative.

1. The man is waiting for you. 2. The children are playing in the room. 3. The people are hurrying to the station. 4. He is coming to the University later today. 5. They are arriving in London tomorrow. 6. You are going to the cafeteria. 7. Marry is doing her lessons now. 8. His parents are leaving next week. 9. The student is having a test. 10. We are having dinner now.

 

Exercise 7. Give the short answers.

1. Are you having an English class now? 2. Are you speaking Ukrainian? 3. Are you sitting? 4. Are you standing? 5. Is the teacher asking you questions? 6. Are you listening to what the teacher is saying? 7. Are you looking at the blackboard? 8. Are you looking at the teacher? 9. Is he reading the text? 10. Is she writing the words on the blackboard? 11. Are they repeating the words after the teacher?

 

Exercise 8. Make the questions and answer them.

Example: What are you (they) doing? – We are speaking.

                 What is he (she) doing? – He is running.

(to take a rest, to read a newspaper, to write a letter, to watch TV, to listen to the radio, to do one`s homework, to have supper, to wash, to shave, to dress, to do morning exercises).

 

Example: What (which) book are you (we, they) reading?

                 What (which) mark is he (she) getting?

(newspaper – to read, language – to learn, TV program – to watch, exercise -  to do, lesson – to study, composition – to write, music – to listen to, article – to translate, film – to discuss, telegrams – to send, work – to do, paragraph – to read, poem – to recite, picture – to describe, text – to retell, sentence – to translate)

 

Example: Where is he (she) swimming now?

               Where are you (we, they) swimming now?

(to work, to take a rest, to spend one`s holidays, to study, to take a walk, to go to, to hurry to, to arrive in, to be in time for,  to write down new expressions, to do sums, to do one`s homework).

 

Example: Who is going to college?

(to wait for you, to play in the garden, to hurry to the University, to arrive in the USA, to go to the cafeteria, to do one`s lessons, to leave for Dublin, to finish one`s work, to go for a walk after dinner, to give private lessons, to sing a comic song).

 

Exercise 9. Put the questions to the italicized words.

1. Lucy is taking her examination now. 2. Tom is playing chess with his friend in the yard. 3. Many students are going to the library. 4. She is looking at the picture. 5. My friend is answering his teacher’s questions. 6. They are speaking about their work. 7. I am reading an interesting book. 8. Somebody is swimming fast over there. 9. These engineers are discussing a difficult question now.

 

Exercise 10. Make the following negative.

1. I’m writing a letter. 2. We’re cleaning the car. 3. They’re having lunch. 4. He’s playing in the garden. 5. She’s writing on the blackboard. 6. You’re wearing an old T-shirt. 7. Dan’s playing the guitar. 8. Dan and Ann are washing up. 9. They’re doing their lessons.

 

Exercise 11. Make the following negative using the model.

Model: She is reading now (to write a letter). – She isn`t reading. She is writing a letter.

1. Helen’s skating now (to ski). 2. They’re playing chess (checkers). 3. The students are going home. (to the library). 4. Mother’s making dinner (to wash up). 5. Father’s working in the garden (to take a rest). 6. Ann and John are swimming there (to lie in the sun). 7. I’m asking you questions (to answer your questions). 8. She’s learning new words (to recite a poem). 9. We’re having a meeting (to have an English class)

 

Exercise 12. Make the sentences from the following words.

Exercise 15. Make up dialogues using the substitution table.

A: I`d like to speak to Mr. Smith/Mrs. White

B: I`m afraid that’s impossible. He`s/She’s busy just now.

A: Is he really?

B: Yes, he`s/she’s - preparing for a meeting.

                     -  holding a conference.

                     - speaking to a visitor.

                     - examining his/her students.
