Genres of art and art trends

Синоніми до слова describe (описувати) – portray, depict, reflect.

Синоніми до слова famous (відомий) – prominent, outstanding, distinguished, brilliant, well-known.

Синоніми до слова artist (художник) – painter, portraitist.

Who is a sitter? – It is a person who is having his portrait painted.

What genres of art do you know? – It is a landscape, seascape, still life, battle scene (сцени битв), cityscape, portrait, self-portrait, icon, pastoral scenes (сцени сільського життя), genre painting or everyday painting, historical painting.

What art trends do you know? – It is folk, icon, primitive, abstraction, avant-garde, classicism, futurism, impressionism, realism, surrealism, pop art (in advertisements and comics), hyperrealism (pictures with extreme detail, that resemble photographs).

1. Do you often go to museums? – I rarely go to museums.

2. When did you go to a museum last? – I went to a museum last year.

3. Where is the museum situated? – The museum is situated not far from the town center.

4. Who built it? – I don`t know who built it because the building is old.

5. What can you tell about the expositions of the museum? – There are many things like national embroidery, collection of coins, weapons, clothes, household items, paintings.

Dialogue

-I say, Nick, what are you doing on Sunday?

-I`m going to Lviv to visit some of the museums of the city.

-Oh, that`s wonderful. I`ve been at the historical museum in Lviv. It`s really worth visiting.

-What interesting exhibits do they display?

-Well, there are many things dating back to ancient times: national embroidery, collections of coins, glassware, all kinds of weapons, articles made of bone, stone, iron, silver and different manuscripts.

-Is there a picture gallery in the city?

-Oh, yes, and by the way, it’s very rich. It`s named after Vasyl Stefanyk, a well-known Ukrainian writer. It has beautiful collections of pictures, portraits, landscapes, seascapes and still life. They mostly belong to Ukrainian artists.

-It`s good you`ve shared your impressions with me. I`m impatient to see it all with my own eyes.
