Goals of the lesson:

-to encourage students in debate- style discussion on the topic,

-to encourage students to express their opinions,

-to help students to develop critical thinking skills,

-to encourage team work,

-to explain the advantages of healthy life style,

-to prevent   students from bad habits

 

 

Materials: contrast pictures, video clips, a brochure of American Cancer Society, handouts with advices by Addison-Wesley Publishing Company

 

Procedure:

  1. Introduction and greeting.

T.- Good morning! You look great today! What do you do to look great?

P1-. I wash myself every day.

P2.- I do morning exercises every day.

P3.- I walk 3 km. every day.

P4.- I smile.

P5.- I work hard.

P6.- I try to be positive.

P7.- I eat healthy food.

P8.- I clean teeth in the morning and in the evening.

P9.-I don’t smoke.

P10.- I don’t drink alcohol.

 

  1. T.- I’ve prepared some special words for you on these posters: ” Keep smiling, you are special”,” Be happy, you are special.”

To be happy means to be healthy. It is the most important thing in the world, but unfortunately “ Health is not valued till illness comes”, as the English  proverb says.

         So,what topic are we going to discuss?

 

 

Class: Health and bad habits.

T.- You are right. The motto of our lesson is “Each person is the creator of a temple called the human body.’’ The human body is a perfectly organized creation, and it is in our hands either to be healthy, happy, prevent illness or to ruin our health by bad habits. We’ll discuss what awful effect they have on people and what measures should be taken to prevent them.

 

3.T.-Let’s divide the class into 3 groups.Discuss and write down the list of bad habits you know.

Smoking, drinking alcohol, taking drugs, eating junk food, physical inactivity,

Overeating, secondhand smoke, laziness, coach potato…..

4.T.- Now listen to the chant and respond with the group.

Well, he eats like a pig. He can’t get enough.

He smokes like a chimney. Four packs a day.

He sleeps like a log. What more can I say?

He drinks like a fish. Scotch on the Rocks.

When he gets real mad, he hardly talks.

He cries like a baby, when he’s feeling sad.

He’s the dearest friend I’ve ever had.

T. What bad habits are mentioned here?

P1.Smoking.

P.2.Oversleeping.

P.3. Laziness.

P.4.Drinking.

P.5. Overeating.

5. T.- Today we‘ll speak about smoking. What do you know about this bad habit? In groups write down the list of signs of smokers and read them.

P.1. –Smoking ruins health.

P.2- Smokers cough.

P. 3.- They smell bad.

P. 4.-They have yellow teeth, skin, and hands.

P. 5. –They get more colds, infections, allergies.

6. T. Give reasons why children and adults smoke.

P.1.-to empress friends.

P. 2. – to look cool and confident.

P.3.-to model their friends and parents.

P. 4.–lack of confidence.

I’d like you to compare contrast pictures and describe them in groups.

7.T.- Now let’s read the text of the brochure and make notes of the most striking facts about smoking.     

Each group reads one part and writes 3 shocking facts concerning 1.Your family 2. Your Kids 3.You

Conclusions: Smoking causes lung cancer, heart attack, chest problems, loss of memory, cough, colds, infections, allergies.

8. T.- What measures should be taken by the authorities to prevent young people

from smoking in the society.

P.1.-Ban smoking in all public places, cafes, restaurants, trains, schools, hospitals.

P.2. –Ban selling cigarettes to young people under 21.

P.3. -Ban advertising of tobacco.

P.4.-Double the tax on all forms of tobacco.

P.5.-Give more information to pupils and parents.

 

9. T.-I see you became great experts. Let’s adopt the rules of healthy lifestyle.

1.Go in for sport. Physical exercises are necessary and important.

2. Do your morning exercises every day.

3. Take long walks in the open air.

4. Keep your body clean.

5. Keep your teeth clean.

6. Wash your hands before meals.

7. Sleep with the window open.

8. Do not smoke and do not drink alcohol.

9. Be active and positive, smile.

10.Be busy as a bee.

11. Travel and enjoy life!

10. T.-In pairs give advices. –What’s the matter with you?

-A headache.  –Take two aspirins. –See a doctor. –Go to bed. –Sit quietly. –Walk in the fresh air. –Relax.

-A sore foot.  – Rest it. –Put it in cold water. –Bandage it. –Sit down.

-A cough.- Stop smoking. -Suck a cough drop. –Take an aspirin. –Drink some

honey. –See a doctor.

-A backache. – Lie flat. –See a specialist. –Sit on a straight chair. – Do some

                  Light exercises. –Avoid heavy weights. - Havea massage.

-Overweight. –Eat less. – Take more exercises. –Run every day. – Go on diet. –Eat only fruits and vegetables. – Avoid eating sugar. – Eat less bread.

11.T.-My dear children. Remember:  The best medicine is Doctor Diet, Doctor Quiet and Doctor Merryman”.

      Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is”.At home plan the activities to prevent smoking among children.k you for your active work. Take care of yourself, your family. Live long and healthy life. Enjoy the brightest moments.
