  1. Speaking

Do you always remember about good manners when you are going to sit at the table? What manners should we have?

  1. You have to sit up straight at the table.
  2. You have to eat with a knife and a fork.
  3. You must not eat with your fingers.
  4.  You mustn’t talk with your mouth full.

So, here you can see only main table manners, but you should know more of them.

On your tables you can see some cards with table manners and your task is to read, translate and explain.

  • How to sit: You should sit up straight in your chair. It is not a good idea to lean forwards or backwards.
  • When you eat, you should not lean towards the plate but bring the knife, fork or spoon towards you. Don’t pick up the bowl and bring it to you. This is considered very bad manners.
  • Noises at the table: It is never a good idea to make a noise (a burp )at the table, even if it is into the napkin .It is considered rude to do this. If you accidentally burp, say ‘excuse me.’
  • Using your fingers: Normally we don’t pick food up with our fingers when we are eating main courses. If you are uncertain, the safest thing is to use your knife or fork. There are, however, some foods which we usually eat with our fingers. These include: pizza, sandwiches, burgers, chips (or fries) and fruit.
  • Passing things: If someone asks you to pass something like the salt, only get it if you are the closest person to it. Never lean across someone else’s food. It’s polite not to use it yourself first - pass it directly to the person who asked, then use it later. It’s best to taste your food before you put salt on it.
  • Speed. It’s best not to eat too quickly. Take your time when eating and try to eat at the same speed as everyone else.
  • Your mouth: It is not polite to talk with your mouth full of food, nor to eat with your mouth open. And if possible, don’t make a noise. Never lick your plate after eating.

How much to eat: It is polite to eat the food that you have been offered, so a clear plate is a good plate. It shows that you enjoyed the food. If you can’t finish everything and you need to leave a little, that’s okay. You could say something like -That was very nice, thank you.

  1. Writing

And do you know the rules of Place Setting? Look at the picture of the place setting Alex has made. Match the numbers in the picture with the words from the list Ex.1(a) p.46.: a salad plate, a bread-and-butter plate, a dinner plate, a soup bowl, a water glass, a cup, a saucer, a napkin; silverware: a salad fork, a dinner fork, a knife, a teaspoon, a soup spoon, a butter knife.

Example: Number 1 is a salad plate.

Look at the picture once more. Make up the dialogues of your own and act them out. Use the examples (Ex.1(b) p.46).

1.

A: Excuse me. Where does the knife go?

B: It goes to the right of the dinner plate.

2.

A: Excuse me. Where does  go?

B: It goes to the left/between/on__________ (and_____________).

When I came to your class a postman gave me a letter from a boy. Let’s read it.

Hello, everybody!

I want to ask you some help, but, please, don’t blame me. In a few weeks I’ll come to Ukraine and my friend and I are going to go to the restaurant. I am a quite normal teenager from Washington, but I don’t know how to behave in a restaurant. Please, give me some advice.

 With best wishes,

 Your Dan.

Open your copy-books and write down the answer to Dan’s letter.

Do these tasks and send the screenshot .

How are you now? Choose the smile about your mood at this moment.
