Type: Combined lesson with using multimedia technologies

Time: 40 minutes

Objectives: By the end of the lesson pupils will be able to

use and write ordinary numbers from 1^st to 31^st;
use the names of the moths of the year and order them in the sequence;
say the dates;
read the sentences and express their agreement or disagreement;
use Possessive Case:
remember the chant;
work in pairs and ask and answer the questions about the dates of their birthdays;
work as a team to solve a problem.

Equipment: books and workbooks “English 4” by Alla Nesvit, Power Point presentation, CD game “Way Ahead 3”, computer, Touch board, handouts “The Table of Ordinary Numbers”, two ribbon awards “1st” and “2^nd”.

Introduction

T: Hello everybody! Glad to see you again! Are you ready for the lesson? Show me your text book, your workbook, the daybook, your vocabulary and a pencil-box. Thank you. I can see you are ready for the lesson.

Checking Up the Homework

ANSWERS:

Introducing the topic of the lesson (2 minutes)

T: Now, look at the calendar. What does it help us to know? What can we see?

P1: The day.

P2: The month.

P3: The date. The number or position of the day in a month.

T: So, today we are going to speak about moths of the year, learn to use a calendar to tell dates and find out when is your special day. Each of us has a special day. What is it?

P4: May be a birthday?

T: Yes, it is. Are you ready to start?

PP: Yes, we are.

Warming Up (5 minutes)

T: To tell the dates we have to know the names of the months and numbers. So let’s sing two songs: “The Months of the Year” (1.15 minutes) and “The Number Song” (3.06 minutes).

T: Please, open your books on page 87. Look at Ex. 1. You can see a table of ordinal numbers. Listen and repeat.

Example: 1 first – 11 eleventh – 21 twenty-first

Interactive game. Practicing Grammar: Ordinal Numbers. “Way Ahead 2” Game (Task 19A) (3 minutes)

T: We use ordinary numbers to comment the results of competitions. And now, look at the participants and drag the words into the gaps.

Example: Sue is fourth.

Speaking. Practicing Grammar: Ordinal Numbers. Power Point Presentation “What date is it today?” (5 minutes)

T: And now, look at a sheet of a calendar. It’s a date. It’s the fifteenth of February. Look at the calendar and say the date.

What date is it today?

P5: It’s the thirteenth of February.

T: Look at the names of the months.

What is the first month of the Year?
What is the fifth month?
What is the last month?

T: I have some sentences about the months of the year. Some of them are true and some are false. Read and agree or disagree.

T: Every month people have their special days. They have their birthdays. It’s time to open your books on page 88. Task 4. Listen and repeat the chant.

T: Look at the pictures and dates. Ask anybody you like as an example.

Example: What is the tenth of a year? – It’s October. etc.

Active Game “A Fly Swatter”. (5 minutes)

T: At the end of the lesson let’s play “A Fly Swatter” game. We have the first row “A Red Team” and the second row “A Yellow Team”. The pupils from both teams in turn have to listen to the ordinal number and run to the blackboard to swat it. The faster pupil gets a point. The team with more points wins. Here we go!
