studying.

                               Films

Suggested level – B1 –intermediate.

Objectives:

   -to develop students' language skills in listening, speaking on the basis of interactive technologies;

   -to encourage students to speak on their own attitude and discuss the films they have seen;

  -to practice their vocabulary, to consolidate the knowledge of the lexical and grammar material;

  -to widen students’ outlook, develop creativity and motivate to further

  studying.

 Equipment: video films, tapes, a computer, a tape-recorder, computer presentation on topic, jumbled sentences.

                                 Procedure

I. Introduction

T. Good morning, everybody. I hope everyone is Ok and ready to start our unusual and very interesting lesson.

We shall discuss some films today you’ve already seen.

Today you have to assess yourselves and during the lesson put points at the self assessment cards.

The words of Ingmar Bergman are the epigraph to our lesson.

“ Film as dream, film as music. No art passes our conscience it the way film does   goes directly to our feelings, deep down  into the dark rooms of our souls.”

      How do you interpret this quotation?

II. Main part

1.Warming-up. Making an association map ( work on the blackboard and in the students' copybooks)

   T.  The first task is to make an association map to the word “film”.What ideas come to your mind when you think about films?

2. Lexical exercise. Pair work. Matching the definition to the word.

    T. speaking about films we usually speak about different kinds of films. What kinds of films do you  know?

   P. Fantasy, action film, musical, romantic, war films, adventure etc.

   T.  You’ ll have jumbled sentences. Work in pairs. Your task is to match the definition and the  kind o film.

  1. Action film

 Which has a lot of fighting and chasing in it.

  1. A comedy

 

A funny film with happy ending

  1. A disaster film

A film about floods, storms, etc.

About smth that causes a lot of damage.

  1. Fantasy

A film about strange or imagined events and people.

A film about events in history, about real people in the past.

     8. Science fiction

About life in the future, especially scientific adventures often describing space travel and life on other planets.

 A film causing a lot of excitement and sometimes fear because of a murder.

    10. War

 A film about different wars.

   11. Western

 A film about cowboys who lived in the USA in the 19 century.

12. Cartoon

A film using drawing and not real people.

13. Adventure film

About unusual adventures.

14. Horror film

A film about monsters, unreal creatures.

 

 

 

3. Revision of adjectives. Work in groups.

    T. Describing different kinds of films we usually use a lot of adjectives to make our speech brighter. Let’s revise them. You have to work in groups.

Group 1 should  write as many as possible positive adjectives.

Group2 should  write as many as possible negative adjectives.

( Possible answers :

                positive adjectives : exciting, brilliant, excellent, great, wonderful, educational, fantastic, fascinating, funny, imaginative, interesting, romantic etc.

               negative adjectives : boring, scary, disgusting, the worst, dull, horrible, terrible, ugly, nasty, uninteresting etc.)

4. Listening practice .Developing listening skills.

a) Listen to the conversation about a film and underline the correct word (Enterprse 3 p.94 ex.10)

1. It was amusing / thrilling.

2. The acting was excellent / horrible.

3. The plot was believable /  unbelievable.

4. The characters were realistic/dull.

5. The dialogue was boring / clever.

6. The scrip was well-written / uninteresting.

b) Watching video. (Enterprise 3. Module 4)

T. You will watch six people speaking about the films they’ve seen. You have to tick the right speaker.

5. Speaking. Discussion.

a) Developing speaking skills using computer presentation “Famous actors” & “Clips from famous films”

T. Speaking about films we can’t but mention the names of famous actors & actresses. Now you’ll watch the computer presentation about actors, your task is to guess their names & answer the questions:

  1. Who’s that actor / actress?
  2. What can you say about his / her acting?
  3. What films did she / he star in?

T. Now you will watch the parts of the famous films. You have to guess the name of the film & answer the questions:

  1. What is the name of the film?
  2. What kind of film is this?
  3. What can you say about the plot, acting, special effects and characters?

(Used films: Friends, Home alone, The Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Carribean, Sherlock Holmes, Madagascar, The Twilight, Star Wars, Titanic.)

b) Developing speaking skills. Making the dialogue. Pair work. Discussing a film.

T. Now work in pairs. Choose a film or two that you have both seen recently. Use words & expressions from this lesson to discuss them.

  1.  I have recently seen a film ____________. I think the plot is really exciting. What about you?
  2. Well , it is quite a well-writing story & the special effects are brilliant.

P1 That’s true. What do you think of ___________________.

P2 to my mind it’s well worth seeing & I would recommend it to anyone.

6. Developing listening skills using modern popular songs.

T. Today we have discussed a lot of films. But the most beloved & impressed is, without doubt, “Titanic”. And I am sure that everyone loves the song from this film performed by Celine Dion. Now you will listen  to it & the task is to complete the gaps

(used clip from the film “Titanic”)

III Summing up.

T. Today we’ve spoken much about different films. You were active & worked very hard. I like your work. Has the lesson helped you to know more about films & develop your speaking & listening skills?
