10 How we can save the environment?

Objectives:

  •           To develop students’ reading and writing skills through various activities;
  •           To provide students with practice in listening comprehension;
  •           To teach students responsibility for keeping our environment clean.

  Procedure

          Introduction

You know that the problem of the protection of our environment is urgent nowadays. In recent years the development of industry and the growth of big cities have had a bad influence on nature. People often do things which pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink  and the land which gives us bread. We must do our best to improve the situation. Of course, there are some solutions of the problem.

 Listening

Listen to the conversation and match the suggestions with the results

 Suggestions:

  1. Better recycling system
  2. Fine people who  drop litter
  3. Daily rubbish collection

 Results

  1.       Less litter in the streets
  2.      Prevent the spread of diseases
  3.       Reduce amount of rubbish and save natural resources

The leader of an Eco-Club:

The subject of our today’s meeting is “keeping our city clean” and we’ll present our suggestions how to make our city a better place to live in.

Mary: I’ve been living in this city for seven years. I think something should be done to keep rubbish off the streets. It is collected only four times a week. I suggest janitors collect rubbish daily then there would not be piles of rubbish on the streets causing the spread of disease.

Pete: In my opinion, we need a better recycling system. We can recycle paper, plastic can, glass instead of throwing all these things away. So we should have more recycling bins. Then we could reduce the amount of garbage save natural resources.

Ann: As for me, I get very upset to see litter on the streets. People throw away bottles and cans, drops chocolate bar wrappers, food packaging everywhere. If people knew that they would be fined, they would never drop litter on the streets.

 Reading

Read the text and fill the gaps with appropriate words or phrases from the list: another way to, would be, as a matter of fact, if, all in all, therefore, to begin with, fortunately.

Nowadays we are making so much garbage that in many places there isn’t enough room to bury it all. And litter is a concern which a lot of countries have to deal with. We have to cut down the amount of garbage we make.

… there are some solutions which can reduce the growing amount of waste…we should reject buying things that can’t be re-used, like plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic wrapping and other packaging. Industrial enterprises and companies should be encouraged to use bio-degradable packaging. Bio-degradable items decompose naturally …they are not dangerous for the environment….reduce litter … educate people to recycle(which means re-using materials instead of throwing them away) their house hold waste products… it has always keep good in reducing litter.

….. there are many solutions to the problem of litter. …. We recycle and reject, we we’ll produce a lot less garbage and keep our planet green.

 Language development

Match suggestions with the corresponding results. Link then with appropriate word phrase.

 Suggestions.

  1. One way to reduce pollution in large cities would be to encourage people to drive vehicles which run on lead – free fuel. Because exhaust fumes are one of the main causes of air pollution.
  2. It has been suggested that one way to save the rain forest is to stop logging companies from destroying the tropical forest and to make them plant new trees.
  3. Another way to stop reserve rainforest is to make national parks.
  4. One way to stop the thinning of the ozone layer is to give up using chloro-fluoro-carbon gases that are in industrial and household products: refrigerators, air conditioners, aerosols, cleaning chemicals, food packaging foam insulation. CFCs destroy the ozone layer of the Earth and cause “greenhouse effect”. It increases the risk of skin cancer, weakens the immune system of people.

Results

  • It could  give all of us cleaner air to breathe. The rainforest is a natural recycler and protector of our planet. It recycles carbon, nitrogen and produces oxygen which we breathe.
  • Animals wouldn’t face extinction. Trees provide home for animals, they provide food for insects, reptiles, birds and mammals.
  • People wouldn’t damage ozone layer which protects the Earth from the sun’s destructive ultraviolet rays.
  • There would be less air pollution due to the reduction in harmful exhaust fumes.

Writing

You are a member of an Eco-club. Write an essay called “How we can save our planet” using the suggestions:

  1. People should be encouraged to use environmentally friendly products, bio-degradable packaging, stop using CFCs so that don’t demage the ozone layer or pollute the water and the land.
  2. More people should use public transport (first it concerns tram, trolley-buses, metro) or bicycles because they don’t pollute the environment, the air in the cities would be cleaner.
  3. More trees should be planted so that there is more oxygen. The forests are the lungs of our planet. Trees produce oxygen which we breathe.
  4. Recycling shoul be encouraged so that natural resources aren’t wasted
