Lesson plan   in the 8th form

 

  1. The subject of the lesson.   Music in Our Life . Past time phrases.
  2.  By  theend of the  lesson  students will be able to:
    •   practise the vocabulary on the topic about music;
    •   develop  their  speaking skills on the topic;
    •   practise   in making up quotations about music of their own;
    • use of past time phrases;
    • ask and answer questions following the instructions;
    • work in pairs;
    • develop their imagination;
    • train their memory, logical thinking;
    • extend their knowledge about the power of music.
  3. Teaching aids and teaching materials: the textbook “Our English. 8” by Byrkun L. V.; disk with a song and video; cards with quotations; cards with pictures of famous singers; grammar cards with past time phrases and exercises.
  4. The type of the lesson: a talk show.
  5. The procedure of the lesson
  1. Preliminaries:
  1. greetings

Good afternoon, pupils. I’m very glad to see you. How are you today?

Who is on duty today?

What date is it today? Who is absent? OK. I hope you are ready for our talk show, aren’t you? Do you like music? What kind of music do you prefer?

No wonder today we are going to speak about music. You’ll discuss different quotations, talk about music styles and famous singers. You’ll get to know more about its power. So the subject of our talk show is “In the Realm of Music”.

Time: 1 minute

2. Warming up. The pupils read the motto of the talk show from the blackboard and discuss it. Then they read the definition of music.

 Look at the board, please and read the motto of our talk show. Do you agree with this wonderful quotation? Give arguments.

  “Life without music would be a mistake”. (Friedrich Nietzsche)

 OK. And now let's read the definition of music according to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English.

  Music is a series of sounds made by instruments or voices in

            a way that is pleasant and exciting.

 Time: 3 minutes

3. Speaking. Discussion. The pupils are given cards with the quotations about music by famous people. They read them and discuss. (Card 1)

 We’ve just read the definition of music. Now I’ll give you cards and we’ll discuss some quotations by famous people and see how they define music. Will you read the first quotation, please? And try to explain. 

 Time: 5 minutes

4. Writing and reading. Playing the game. The pupils are given the task to make up one or two quotations of their own, write them down in their copybooks, and then read them aloud.  

 Let’s play a creative game. You are to make up one or two quotations of your own, and write them down in your copybooks. In a few minutes I do hope to hear nice quotations which you’ll create.

 Time: 3 minutes

5. Speaking. Pre-listening activity. The pupils read the sentences of ex. 2 (a), p. 115 and say if they agree or disagree with them.

 Open your books at p. 115 and do ex. 2 (a). Read the given sentences. Do you agree or disagree with them?

 Time: 2 minutes

6. Listening and reading. The pupils listen to the text of ex. 2 (b), p. 115 about the power of music. Then they read it and translate.

 Now get down to ex. 2 (b), p. 115. Listen to the text about the power of music. Did you find it interesting? Read the text and translate.

 Time: 6 minutes

7. Writing and speaking. Checking pupils’ listening comprehension. The pupils do ex. 3, p. 116. They mark the statements true or false, and correct the false ones orally. 

 Do ex. 3, p. 116 in the written form. Mark the statements true or false. Then correct the false ones orally.

 Time: 3 minutes

8. Speaking. Post-listening activity. The pupils name different music styles and speak about the way they influence listeners.

 There are different kinds of music. Please name them. Nice of you. And what can you say about the way they influence us? What music is the most popular with people? And why?

 Time: 4 minutes

9. Listening and speaking. Musical pause. The pupils listen to the song “Love Me Tender” and answer the teacher’s questions.

 Listen to the song “Love Me Tender”. What can you say about this song? Who is it performed by? Do you like it? What influences your attitude to a song? Which is more important to you: the lyrics of the song or its melody?

 Time: 3 minutes

10. Speaking. The pupils are shown the pictures of famous singers. They have to guess their names and say what kind of music each singer represents. (Card 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

 Look at the picture and name the singer. What kind of music does he or she represent?

 Time: 3 minutes

11. Reading and writing. Grammar practice. The pupils receive grammar cards to study past time phrases. They read them and do the given exercises. They put past time phrases in order and then fill in the gaps with them. (Card 7)

 Now read about past time phrases from the given card. Then do the following exercises. Put past time phrases in order and then fill in the gaps with them.

 Time: 4 minutes

12. Speaking. Pair work. The pupils are given cards to work in pairs. They ask and answer questions following the instructions. (Card 8)

 Work in pairs. Follow the instructions. Read the task, please. Ask and answer questions about the last time you did these things.

 Time: 5 minutes

13. Watching and speaking. The pupils watch Paul McCartney’s performance of the song “Yesterday” and answer the teacher’s questions. 

 And now, dear talk show participants let’s enjoy listening to “The Beatles”. You’ll have a great opportunity to watch Paul McCartney’s performance of this wonderful song. Of course, it’s “Yesterday”. Do you like it? Do you know the words? You can also sing if you want.

 Time: 3 minutes

14. Summing up the lesson. Evaluating pupils' achievements. Motivating marks.

 So today we spoke a lot about music, its styles and famous singers. You listened to the songs and watched a video. You learnt past time phrases.

 All of you were very active and worked carefully. Thank you very much for your fruitful work. Your marks are…

15. Home task. Your home task is to write an essay “Music in My Life” or “In the Realm of Music” using the quotations by famous people and those of your own.
