We can’t speak about Shakespeare without speaking about his sonnets. They are his only lyrical pieces, the only things he has written about himself. By reading between the lines of the sonnets we may see a tragedy in Shakespeare’s life, a tragedy which he might not have fully understand himself.

Many centuries have passed since his death, but Shakespeare is still considered to be the greatest of all playwrights and poets. His plays are still acted in the whole world.

 5. Listening. And now I want to suggest you to listen to the sonnet 130  by W. Shakespeare in original.

6. Post – listening task. So you have just listened to the sonnet 130 by W. Shakespeare in original. And now I have some task for you. Your task is to complete the statements with the missing words:

SONNET 130

My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;

Coral is far more red than her lips' red;

If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;

If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.

I have seen roses damask’s, red and white,

But no such roses see I in her cheeks;

And in some perfumes is there more delight

Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.

I love to hear her speak, yet well I know

That music hath a far more pleasing sound;

I grant I never saw a goddess go;

My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:

   And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare

   As any she belied with false compare.

Yes, you are right. Great work.

We don’t know a lot of facts of Shakespeare’s life. We can only guess what kind of man he was, that’s why there are many legends about his life.

Read the sonnet and answer the question: What is the summary of Shakespeare's sonnet 130?

SONNET 130

At home you’ll have to prepare a retelling about the great English writer W. Shakespeare. You can do it basing on our lesson, use any literature or find the information in the Internet on such sites as Google or Wikipedia.

15. Summing - up.

 Dear friends, thank you for the lesson. You have learnt a lot of things about Shakespeare’s family, about his native town, about his place and his sonnets.  I think it was very interesting and you will remember our lesson for a long time. Shakespeare was a great poet. He was “for all time”.

Since our lesson was conducted both in Ukrainian and in English, I’d like to summarize. I think all of you felt the atmosphere of Shakespeare’s times. All pupils who took part in our lesson got excellent marks.

Shakespeare Quotations

  • Love all, trust a few, do wrong to none.
  • A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.
  • All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players.
  • The wheel is come full circle.
  • To be or not to be? That is the question.
  • "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears" ("Друзі, співгромадяни, прислухайтесь до мене")
  • "Neither a borrower nor a lender be" ("Не бери в борг і не позичай")
  • A good heart's worth gold.
