Intellectual quiz “The Wonderful World of English”

Мета: узагальнити знання, уміння та навички учнів з вивченого матеріалу; вдосконалювати навички читання, аудіювання та говоріння; розширювати ерудицію учнів; розширювати лінгвістичний кругозір учнів; розвивати логічне мислення, пам'ять, увагу учнів; розвивати інтелектуальні здібності учнів; формувати позитивне ставлення до вивчення англійської мови; виховувати вміння працювати у групах; виховувати в учнів почуття відповідальності.

Обладнання: роздатковий матеріал, зірки, презентація, малюнки.

Procedure

Teacher: Dear friends! I am glad to welcome you at the intellectual quiz “The Wonderful World of English”. The rules of our quiz are very simple. There will be several tasks and for each correct answer the team will get a star. At the end of our intellectual quiz we shall count the stars and find out which team is the most active and friendly. By the way, don’t scream out. The team that screams out will lose the stars.

Let’s start our quiz. Here the three very strong teams are present: the first team, the second team and the third one.

Are you ready? Let’s begin our intellectual quiz. I wish you good luck!

Task 1. “Find the opposites”

T: Look at the blackboard! Here you can see twelve opposite words, but they are mixed. Your task is to find the opposite word for each word from the first column. Do it in turns. The team will get one star for each pair of opposite words. You’ve got 5-7 minutes. Let’s go.

Task 2. “Draw the time” (the Captains’ competition)

T: Look at the clocks. As you can see on the clocks the hands are missing. The task for each captain is to draw the hands pointing the time that you can see under the clocks. The team will get one star for each correct answer. You’ve got three-four minutes.

It’s ten to twelve

It’s half past two

It’s twenty-five past seven

It’s a quarter past three

It’s a quarter to eight

Task 3. “The Months of the Year”

T: Look at the cards. As you can see there are months of the year. The task for each team is to write these months in the correct order and find them in the grid. The team will get one star for each correct answer. You’ve got ten minutes. Let’s go.

Task 4 .“Find the mistakes”

T: Look at the board. There are some sentences with mistakes. The task for each team is to find these mistakes. Each sentence has got only one mistake. Look at the sentence and hand up if you know where mistake is. If one team gives the incorrect answer, the other team may give the correct answer and get one extra star. The team will get one star for each correct answer.

•                      There are six days in a week.
•                      There is four weeks in a month.
•                      Do you know the names of the ten days of the week?
•                      They are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, March, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
•                      The pupils doesn’t go to school on Sunday.
•                      We are at the Ukrainian lesson now.

Task 5. “Say the correct answer”

T: Look at the blackboard! Here you can see some statements. The task for each team is to say the correct answer. There may be different questions, riddles, sums, etc. The team will get one star for each correct answer. If one team gives the incorrect answer, the other team may give the correct answer and get one extra star.

6.                   Who drives a car? (A driver)
7.                   We use many when we can’t count something. Yes or no? (No)
8.                   Who works with children at school? (A teacher)
9.                   At this lesson pupils sing songs. (Music)
10.             Do the sum: ten minus two is … (Eight)
11.             We use many when we can count something. Yes or no? (Yes)
12.             It is big and fat. It says moo. It is a …. (Cow)
13.             Say the following sentence in the interrogative form: I shall play football tomorrow.
14.             Who builds buildings? (A builder)
15.             The second form of the irregular verb to have is … (Had)
16.             Say the following sentence in the negative form: He will skate next Sunday.
17.             Do the sum: fifteen minus five is … (Ten)
18.             Who helps ill people? (A doctor)

T: This task was the last.  Now count your stars. Each captain says how many stars have you got? Let’s check your counting. Give your stars to other team and count stars again.
