The key to a successful job interview is preparation. It is very important to make sure your CV is up-to-date and free of mistakes. Also, you should gather information about the company or organisation you are applying to. Furthermore, you must know some things about the specific job position, including general responsibilities and daily duties.

Next, it is helpful to prepare for the interview itself by answering typical interview questions. You can try answering these specific questions in front of a friend or family member. Remember, there is always room for improvement; the more you practise, the more confident you will be that you won't mess things up during the interview. You should also prepare questions to ask during the interview. These questions should reflect your research on the company and position. However, remember not to ask any questions about salary on your first interview. If you do, the interviewer may think that you only care about the benefits and that your interest in the company isn't genuine.

Final preparations include choosing what to wear. It is important to select something appropriate. A business suit is always acceptable. If your clothing is clean and well pressed, the interviewer will think that you are a neat and organised person. Also, you must know the location of your interview. You should arrive at the interview ten minutes in advance. You must also remember to bring extra copies of your resume with you. Bringing a small notebook for notes is also a good idea. METHODS OF COOKING

Cooking is a heat treatment of food to make it edible. Many products cannot be eaten raw. Meat, fish and vegetables are usually cooked. Some fruits are not cooked, but some, such as apples, pears, and currants, may be used in pies or to make desserts. Fruits are also cooked to make jams, jellies, and marmalades.
The four basic ways to cook food are:

  • Heating in a liquid (boiling, stewing)
  • Heating in fat or oil (frying and sautéing)
  • Heating in steam (steaming)
  • Heating by dry heat (baking, roasting and grilling).

Boiling. We may boil food in different liquids and mixtures, including water, stock, and wine. Meat, poultry, many vegetables and spaghetti are cooked this way.

Stewing is cooking food slowly in liquid. It is often used for meat. Vegetables, herbs, and spices are usually added at the end of cooking.

Deep-frying is immersion of food in hot fat or oil. Chipped potatoes and doughnuts are the best example of deep-frying. Deep-fried foods are called fritters.

Shallow frying is frying on a pan in hot fat or oil, when the food is fried on both sides. We can fry eggs, meat, vegetables, mushrooms, onions and pancakes.

Sautéing is frying when natural juices of the food are mixed with the fat or oil in the saucepan. We can also add stock, wine or cream. As a result we obtain a dish with a sauce.

Steaming is a method of cooking above the surface of boiling liquid in a covered saucepan. Fish, vegetables, and poultry are especially suitable for steaming, as are some types of puddings.

Baking is dry cooking inside an oven. Bread, cakes, pastries, tarts and biscuits are baked. Vegetables, especially potatoes, may also be cooked in this way.

Roasting is cooking meat and poultry, which are placed in an oven and cooked by dry heat. They are often basted, that is, the juices from the meat are spooned over during the process. Some cooks wrap the meat in a roasting foil with a little oil or melted fat. Meat can be also roasted on a spit.

Grilling is a rapid method of cooking poultry, fish, cuts of meat, sausages and kebabs by heat, the source of which may be gas, electricity, or charcoal.

FACING THE REAL WORLD

– Have you already begun developing your plans for the future?

– It is very difficult to give a definite answer right now. But every time I am asked the question “What do you want to be?” I feel nervous. I usually never tell the truth and say “ I haven’t the slightest idea” and try to sound mysteriously.

– But why?

– That makes other people feel more nervous than me.

– Have you ever turned to your parents for advice?

– Oh. My mother is convinced that I should follow in the footsteps of my father and become a lawyer. My granny thinks that I should find a nice wealthy man to marry. And my father says “Just do what makes you happy”. My uncle encourages me by promising a job in his company. Being child I wanted to be like a cashier in the supermarket with long hair, blue eye shadows and long fingernail moving the cash. But my mother would say “You are not suitable for the job like that. You are too smart”. It is a very difficult to face the real world after being spooned with knowledge at school. And the question “What do you want to be?” never used to be threatening like now.

What if I choose the wrong thing and feel regret a mistake in future? Of course like everyone I have some skills and interests and inclinations. But they seem to be undeveloped and may seem outstanding.

I realize that I should plan out the rest of my life and explore my choice from every angle, but I have never thought more than six months ahead.

There is one thing I know I wouldn’t like to be “a square in a round hole”.

Questions for discussion

1. What problems are involved in this interview?

2. Why is the girl afraid to enter the real world after being spoonfed with knowledge at school.

3. What does the real world mean for her? And for you?

4. Why does her mother say that she is too smart to be a cashier?

5. Does it mean that a man doing a less prestigious work is a loser?

6. The girl doesn’t want to be a square peg in a round hole. Do you know someone who is a square peg in a round hole?

7. What would you do if you were in the same situation? Give your piece of advice.

“Find something you love to do and you'll never have to work a day in your life. For many people a job is more than an income — it's an important part of who we are.”
