DISCUSSION AT THE ROUND TABLE

Teacher.  Ladies and gentlemen! We have gathered here at our so-called "round table" to speak about social diseases, their reasons and how to fight them. The best international experts in the fields of medicine and psychology are ready to share their points of view and answer any questions that will arise during the discussion.

The results we are going to obtain will be a superb guide for the people who are in trouble, who want to get rid of some diseases, harmful habits and, such as consuming junk food, alcohol, smoking, being stress induced. Look at the plan of our discussion:

1.  Stress and how to avoid it.

2.  Junk food or proper food?

3.  Smoking: the best way to bad health.

4.  How to keep fit.

Teacher.  Dear participants! Is there anything more important than health? I doubt it. There are certain rules of health, which you are supposed to observe. Let's remember some famous sayings about health and explain their meaning.

1.  "Health is above wealth."

SI: Many people consider wealth to be the highest objective in life. But they forget that there are some things that money can't buy. For instance, love, friendship, respect and health. Of course, with money you can get better medical treatment in case you are ill but, unfortunately, there exist some incurable diseases or disabilities which make people suffer, and no wealth is able to cure them. So, I am sure that good health is the main priority in life.

2.  "A sound mind in a sound body."

S2: The connection is obvious. If our body suffers from any disorder, our mind suffers with it, and we are unable to perform social duties. A sound body is the result of a healthy way of life a person leads. If people care about their health, they willingly choose healthy habits and avoid bad ones.

3.  "Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise."

S3: The saying proves that rest is also necessary to the health of both body and mind. Late hours are very harmful to the health as they exhaust the nervous system. We should go to bed early and get up early.

4.   "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."

5.   "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

S4: These sayings stress the importance of vitamins. If we eat enough fruit all the year round, we supply ourselves with energy and strength. Besides we should constantly take care of ourselves: wear warm clothes in nasty weather, eat proper food etc. In one word, not to be indifferent to our own health.

Teacher.  We live a very dynamic life. We feel its rhythm and it's so difficult to avoid stress. We invite the Doctor of Psychology to speak about sources of stress and what can be done to avoid it.

Doctor of Psychology: According to psychology stress is caused by any event or situation that makes a person feel worried and unable to relax. Usually stress is induced by overwork, anxiety about exams or lack of money, unemployment, bereavement, poor relationships, marriage breakdown, sexual difficulties, poor working or living conditions, constant exposure to loud noise.

Acquiring some control over stress and learning to relax when possible are the best treatments.

The practice of yoga proves to be rather effective. It has been found an effective stress-reducer.

LISTENING

Before listening

Teacher.  I want to add that "a good laugh is the best medicine for stress". If you feel nervous a little bit right now, let's listen to a joke for relaxation.

A middle-aged woman comes up to

a middle-aged man.

-  Excuse me, you look so well Can you tell me what you do fo that?

                                 I like classical music

- Nothing special,.. Well, I smokt 2 boxes of cigarettes a day, drink і bottles of beer a day and spend nr nights playing cards at the casino...

-   Unbelievable!!! And... by tht way, how old are you?

-25.

Teacher.  Do you think this joke is trai to life? Why? Do you agree that ou grandparents were healthier 40 year, ago? Vote, please. Now imagine twc middle-aged women (grandmothers are taking the bus and chatting abou how habits in Britain have changed After listening you will compare then with your habits on 4 items:

breakfast                games/sport

getting to school

after school activities

TEXT

In some ways people are healthier nowadays than they were 40 yean ago. Yes, but in many other way; young people today are quite unhealthy and unfit. 40 years ago most young people in Britain would set off for school after a big breakfast of bacon and eggs, whereas today people tend to have a smaller, healthier breakfast.

But after that look what happens: 40 years ago most children would go to school by bike or on foot — good healthy exercise. Today they take a bus or are driven to school by their parents.

But what about games? Most schoolchildren simply don't play them today. Forty years ago they took up all sorts of sport. And after school in those days children played outside.

They did some form of exercise. Young people today are glued to the television, or they're busy playing computer games.

By the time they're grown up, children today will have had almost no contact with sport. By the end of a typical weekend a child will have watched over ten hours of television. These children won't have exercised their hearts to anything like the desirable levels. That is why I say that the children of today are unhealthy and unfit — and we need to do something about it.

After listening

Teacher.  Let's discuss a very essential item for everyone -healthy food as opposed to junk food.

SI: I'm a gymnast. Well, the most important thing is balance and variety. You should eat different kinds of food when you're training. You should eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables because they give you lots of vitamins, especially vitamin С which is important.

S2: I'm a runner and I want you to listen to my advice. You should eat enough food with carbohydrates, because when you are training you need a lot of energy. You should eat bread, potatoes and pasta. But you mustn't eat too many sweets and chocolates because you'll put on weight and they're bad for your teeth.

S3: Do you see my muscles? I'm a weightlifter. I think

protein is important when you're training. For protein you should eat meat and vegetables, like beans. You should also eat plenty of eggs and drink milk. They give you calcium which is important to your bones.

S4: Really, many people are worried that young people today eat too much junk food: too many chips, crisps, too many hamburgers and chocolate bars and not enough fruit or vegetables. I've read an interesting story recently.

JUNK FOOD LEADS TO SCURVY

A fourteen-year-old girl from Ireland has been diagnosed as having scurvy, a disease that no one has heard of in Western Europe for many years.

The girl complained of weakness, pain in her bones and muscles and bleeding in her mouth. Neither her parents nor her doctor had seen anything like this before and didn't recognize the symptoms of scurvy, which is a disease that sailors used to have.

It is caused by vitamin С deficiency and hasn't been recorded anywhere in the world for about 200 years. It is easily treated by taking vitamin С or simply eating plenty of fresh fruit. It is thought that the girl had eaten nothing but junk food for several months.

S5: The motto of this short report is: less coffee, fewer heart attacks.

A person drinking coffee five or more cups a day has more than twice the risk of having heart problems than one who drinks no coffee at all. Over 1,000 men were surveyed at five-year intervals for up to 25 years of their coffee use                         Young people today are glued to the

One major finding was that even when other   television, or they're busy playing computer games

factors.- smoking, blood pressure, cholesterol level, and age - are taken into account, there is still a greater risk of heart trouble among coffee drinkers.

In order to lessen that risk, doctors advise that coffee drinkers besides quitting smoking and having their cholesterol levels checked, should be prudent in their coffee intake.

Teacher.  Nowadays we are exposed to an aggressive advertising campaign on medicines which work miracles. People using them become thinner, prettier, healthier. So much depends on the food we take, on a healthy way of life. Taking medicine can wait. Maybe it's worth changing your diet or moving more?

Have a look at this boy. This is James how he looked last year. This is James today (a picture of health, isn't he?)

1.  This is James how he looked last year. Look at the notes about what he used to do regularly and make up sentences.

-  2 milkshakes for lunch

-  6 colas a day

-  no exercise

-  a chocolate bar for breakfast

-  no fruit or vegetables

Example:

He used to drink two milkshakes for lunch.

2.  This is James today. Make up sentences from the notes about his life now.

- swims 3 times a week                   . :

-  no milkshakes

-  no chocolate

-  2 glasses of orange juice a day

-  cycles to school

Example:

Nowadays he swims three times a week.

Junk food leads to scurvy

3. In pairs look at the notes about what he did regularly last year and talk about his life now.

Smoking is the quickest way to bad health

Examples:

SI: He used to drink 2 milkshakes for lunch. He used to drink 6 colas a day. He didn't use to do any exercises. He used to eat a chocolate bar for breakfast. He didn't use to eat fruit or vegetables. S2: Now he doesn't drink milkshakes. Instead of that he drinks 2 glasses of orange juice a day.

Now he swims 3 times a week. He avoids eating sweets and cakes. It's better to use some honey instead.

Teacher.  Now listen to a radio programme. Welcome to "Helpline".                                        Junk food leads to scurvy

Shulah: Welcome again to "Helpline" on Radio North Sea. And the first caller tonight is from Portobello. Hello, could you tell us your problem?

Caller: Hello. Well, it's not really my problem, it's my friend's. I'm a bit worried about my best friend.

Shulan: What exactly is your friend's problem?

Caller: Well, she's a bit obsessed by her weight, you know. She's frightened of being fat. And, well, she's been on a diet for the last two weeks and she's not eating anything. At school she doesn't eat anything. And then at home she tells her mother that she's already had a big lunch at school. She's getting very thin and she's looking terrible.

Shulan: Have you spoken to her?

Caller: Yes, I have. I've told her that she's not fat and she's going to get ill, but she just doesn't listen to me.

Shulan: And have you spoken to her mother?

Caller: Well, I don't want to... you know, it's not right.

Shulan: Well, you should have another talk to your friend. She might have- anorexia, which is very dangerous. If she doesn't eat properly, she might get very ill indeed. And if your friend doesn't listen, you'd better talk to her mother or one of her teachers. It could become very serious. Another thing you could do is to ask her to write to us and we can help her out.

Caller: OK, I'll do that. Thank you.

Shulan: You're welcome. Our next caller is from...

Teacher.  : Imagine that girl wants to have your advice. What can you recommend? Let's listen to an expert on fitness.

Expert on fitness: As far as we have understood this girl is suffering from a complex about her imperfection, which she has devised for herself.

It would be no exaggeration to say that she does a terrible harm to her health. I'm sure that everything can be easily corrected with the help of physical loads such as morning exercises or visiting a gym. I'm a fitness manager of the sport clubs "World Class-Ukraine".

Every club is provided with all necessary equipment, which will work miracles with your muscles and body.

Women possess different types of figures. Special exercises are elaborated for each of them.

Women, whose figures belong to T-type, should pay special attention to their legs. Such exercises as squats, falling forward, lifting of dumbbells in front of yourself will help you to obtain perfect forms.

Women with O-type figures should do exercises for all parts of the body, such as bending your legs in the horizontal position or turning your trunk while sitting, lifting weights etc.

The last A-type is the most widely spread among the women of our country.

All they need is to make the common outline of their figures better.

If you lack time for visiting a gym, you can read the description of all the exercises in our magazine.

The "face" of it is Olha Kabo, a popular actress. She demonstrates special exercises for your chest, shoulders, back, legs, buttocks, thighs.

Don't worry about the time! 20 minutes a day will be enough to make your appearance better.

It should be pointed out that any complex of exercises can't make you look better if you don't have a desire to look so!

Teacher.  Now I shall mention some health problems and you will easily guess what we are going to speak about: yellow fingers, yellow teeth, a bad cough, anorexia etc.

Yes, it's smoking. Smoking is the quickest way to bad health. Now you have a chance to ask Minister of Health (MH) any questions about smoking as a harmful habit.

SI: How many people today indulge in the harmful habit of smoking?

MH: On average, half men and a quarter of women in the world smoke.

S2: What is being done to reduce smoking?

MH: In the past few years there has been a growing awareness of the dangers of smoking throughout the world. The anti-smoking campaigns launched in a number of countries have brought about extensive public censure for this harmful habit. In our country special legislative, medical and educational measures are being worked out. At schools lessons on the harm of smoking have been included in the courses of anatomy, physiology and hygiene. The sale of cigarettes to teenagers is prohibited. Warnings are printed on packets of cigarette brands. The ministers of railways, aviation and culture implement measures for regularity, limiting and restricting smoking in trains, planes, sea vessels, theatres, clubs etc.

S3: How can mass media help you in realisation of your Health Programme?

MH: Oh, at least advertising of alcohol and smoking should be prohibited. There should be more interviews with people who got rid of those harmful habits.

S4: Are light cigarettes less dangerous?

MH: Well, many people deceive themselves by thinking it is true. I am sure people just start smoking more frequently. Light cigarettes are as dangerous as usual ones.

S5: Will there be fewer smokers if the price for cigarettes goes up?

MH: It's a disputable question. On the one hand — yes. On the other hand - no, because people will try to find the way out by smoking even more poisoning substances.

T: Now let me, introduce the representative of the international organisation "Smoke Quitters".

S6: Most smokers want to quit smoking, because it's very dangerous to your health. Some people quit without any trouble. Other people need help. "Smoke Quitters" is an organisation of ex-smokers. They give special courses to help people. Here are some of the questions they ask the first day: "How long have you been a smoker? How many cigarettes do you smoke a day? Can you remember your first cigarette? Have you ever been able to quit for a short time? Why do you want to quit?"

Teacher.  We've got some calls. People want to share their problems. What sort of advice can be given in each case?

Caller 1: I have smoked for 30 years. I smoke two packets of cigarettes a day. I can't remember my first cigarette. I've never been able to quit even when I was sick. Now I have heart problems. I've to quit or I'll die.

A: Are you tired of life? Aren't you sorry for the people who surround you? They suffer together with you. They love you and they hope you will make one more effort and choose life instead of death. If you are determined to quit smoking, write down the telephone number of our professional psychologist.

Caller 2: I have been a smoker for 9 years. I smoke a packet a day. I remember my first cigarette, because I got sick. I've been able to quit twice - once when I was expecting my baby, and the other time when I had bad sore throat. I want to live longer and look better.

A: It's wonderful that you have made some attempts to quit smoking. We can encourage you by sending our visual means: films and posters, showing horrible effects of smoking. We believe in your reason and willpower, Please, contact us again.
