MY CHILDHOOD HERO

Read the text below. For questions (1–5), choose the correct answer (A, B, C, or D).

When I was a child, I adored my grandfather, who was my hero in every sense of the word. He was a retired teacher, and everyone in the village respected him for his wisdom and kindness. Grandpa had a way of telling stories that made the most ordinary moments magical. Whether it was a simple walk in the forest or sitting under the stars, he would always have a tale to tell that left me mesmerized.

One of my favorite stories was about his younger days when he helped build a school for children in the nearby village. The school had been severely damaged by a storm, and my grandfather, along with a group of volunteers, worked tirelessly to rebuild it. It was no easy task, as the village had limited resources, and the storm had caused significant damage. But with determination and a sense of purpose, the group managed to complete the work in a few months. My grandfather often said, "Education is the greatest gift we can give," and he truly lived by those words. That line stayed with me throughout my life and inspired me to pursue teaching as my career.

Grandpa also taught me the value of courage and selflessness. He once saved a child from a flooding river, risking his own life in the process. When asked about his bravery, he simply said, "I did what anyone should do." This act of heroism became a story of inspiration in our family and the entire village. Whenever I faced challenges in life—whether it was a tough exam, a difficult decision, or moments of doubt—I thought of my grandfather and found the strength to move forward.

Not only was my grandfather brave and wise, but he was also a man of great humility. Despite being highly respected, he never sought recognition for his deeds. He believed that the best way to lead was by example. His quiet acts of kindness and unwavering principles made him a role model not just for me but for everyone who knew him.

Although my grandfather is no longer here, his lessons and values continue to guide me. His stories, courage, and dedication to helping others remain a source of strength and inspiration in my life. He remains my hero, and I strive to live up to his example every day.

GENERATION GAPS

6. The differences between generations have always existed, but they seem to be widening in today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world. Factors such as technology, culture, and shifting societal values have contributed to an increased sense of misunderstanding between parents, grandparents, and children. However, while these differences can create conflicts, they can also provide opportunities for mutual growth and stronger relationships.

7. One of the most noticeable sources of conflict is values and traditions. Older generations tend to hold onto discipline, respect for authority, and family traditions that they believe are essential for a stable and fulfilling life. On the other hand, younger generations often prioritize self-expression, individuality, and adapting to modern trends. This clash of values can sometimes make parents and children feel like they are living in entirely different worlds.

8. Technology plays a significant role in creating the generation gap. Grandparents may struggle with new devices and often find social media confusing or unnecessary. Parents, although more adept, may still view technology with caution and limit its use. In contrast, children and teenagers often see smartphones, apps, and social platforms as essential tools for communication, entertainment, and even learning. This disparity in understanding can lead to frustration, with older generations labeling the younger as “too dependent on technology,” and younger generations perceiving their elders as “out of touch.”

9. Career aspirations have also shifted dramatically. Previous generations valued job security, steady income, and working for the same employer for decades, often seeing it as a sign of stability and success. Meanwhile, today’s youth are more likely to pursue creative and flexible career paths, prioritizing passion and work-life balance over traditional measures of success. This difference can lead to parents pressuring their children to follow conventional routes while children may feel misunderstood or unsupported in their dreams.

10. Despite these differences, the generation gap is not purely negative. On the contrary, it offers a unique chance for families to come together through shared experiences. Grandparents and parents bring wisdom, resilience, and life lessons gained from years of experience, while younger generations contribute fresh ideas, innovative thinking, and a more inclusive approach to societal norms. By finding common ground through activities like family traditions, holidays, or even modern entertainment, families can create bonds that strengthen their relationships and help bridge the gap, combining the strengths of each generation to adapt to the ever-changing world.

11. The key to overcoming the generation gap lies in communication. Open and respectful discussions about each generation’s experiences, beliefs, and viewpoints can significantly foster understanding. It’s also important to be willing to compromise and appreciate different perspectives. Such conversations create space for empathy and help reduce feelings of alienation between generations.

This paragraph dwells on:
A. Differences in career goals
B. The importance of communication
C. Benefits of shared experiences
D. Technology-related conflicts
E. The role of tradition in families
F. Solutions to bridging the generation gap
G. Mutual learning between generations
H. Challenges in balancing work-life priorities
