The participle

Introduction. A participle is a special kind of word that makes your writing more interesting. In this presentation, I’ll tell about what participles are and how they work.

Types of Participles. There are two main types of participles: Present participles are one type of participle. They are formed by adding '-ing' to a verb. Present participles describe actions happening right now or at the same time as the main verb. For example, in the sentence "The running water is soothing", "running" is the present participle describing the water. Past participle is the other type of participle. To form past participles, you often add '-ed' or '-en' to a verb, but some verbs have irregular past participles. Past participles describe actions that have already happened, or they can show actions that occurred before the main verb. For instance, in the sentence "The broken vase was on the floor", "broken" is the past participle describing the vase.

Types of Participles

Participles as Adjectives. Participles can also act like adjectives, which means they describe or give more information about nouns. For example, in the sentence "The excited child opened the gift", the word "excited" is a participle describing the child.

Participles as Adverbs. Participles can also function as adverbs, modifying verbs in a sentence. This helps us understand how an action is performed. For instance, in the sentence "She sang the song beautifully", the word "beautifully" is a participle modifying the verb "sang", telling us how the song was sung.

Dangling Participles. While participles can enhance your writing, it's important to use them correctly. Watch out for "dangling participles", which occur when the participle doesn't clearly relate to the subject of the sentence. For example, in the sentence "Hiking in the mountains, the view was breathtaking", it's not clear who was hiking. Be cautious to avoid such errors.

Participles are versatile and useful in writing. They can function as adjectives or adverbs, providing extra detail and description. Remember to use them correctly to make your writing more engaging and clear. Conclusion
